Johns Hopkins University Postdoctoral Fellow, Human Factors in Baltimore, Maryland

The Armstrong Institute Center for Health Care Human Factors (www.hopkinsmedicine.org/armstrong/humanfactors) in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow with expertise in human factors engineering, public health, or a related field. Experience in health care related work is highly desired. Experience or interest in both qualitative and quantitative analysis methods is also desired.

The fellow will primarily be working with Dr. Ayse Gurses supporting research projects aimed at improving infection control and prevention practices, design research, diagnostic safety and healthcare worker safety. The fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other interdisciplinary research members of the Armstrong Institute.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize knowledge of human factors methodologies, quality literature, theories of innovation and operational expertise to help external collaborator's improvement teams develop goals and strategies to achieve those goals.

  • Conduct literature review and summarize findings

  • Assist in the preparation of study protocols and materials and other essential study functions (e.g., IRB)

  • Recruit study participants

  • Manage and perform data collection and analysis (e.g., observations, interviews, surveys)

  • Schedule interviews and collect qualitative data through observations, interviews and focus groups with care professionals and clinicians in the ED, ER and home healthcare.

  • Assist in the analysis and management of qualitative data

  • Author/co-author research manuscripts

  • Help with grant proposal writing

  • Help with other relevant work as needed

  • PhD/MD degree or equivalent

  • Formal training and experience in human factors, public health, or a related field

  • Good understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies

  • Strong interest in conducting field research in health care environments

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a research team

  • Ability to balance and prioritize tasks, and delivers timely outcomes

  • Excellent problem solving, writing and communication skills

  • Willing to learn about human factors engineering and basics of infection control/prevention basic principles under the guidance of the study leads

Nice to Have:

  • Strong interest and/or experience in improving infection control and prevention practices in hospitals.

  • Expertise and experience in research processes and methodologies including qualitative and quantitative research methods. Strong interest in conducting field research in health care environments.

  • Experience in reviewing literature using common databases, and use of reference software such as Refworks and Endnote.

  • Experience in data collection protocols and IRB protocol preparation.

  • Experience with conducting usability evaluations (formative and summative)

  • Experience in research processes and qualitative methodologies for data collection & analysis, with corresponding software experience (e.g. semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis with NVivo).

  • Familiarity with quantitative analysis methods and corresponding software experience (e.g., statistical analysis with SPSS).

  • Familiarity with the healthcare domain and experience conducting research in healthcare.

  • Experience in IRB protocol preparation.
