The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Department of Cardiovascular Medicineis currently recruiting for aLaboratory Research Assistant or Lab Research Specialist. This position is responsible for performing routine laboratory maintenance and assisting with research activities. This position will be filled commensurate with the candidate's education and experience. Primary Duties - Laboratory Research Assistant: * Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, tissue collection, preparing solutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens; cell culture, RNA isolation, and protein isolation. * Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: animal handling, high content imaging, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, etc. May participate in the design of research studies. * Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications. * Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. * Perform professional and administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory personnel; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies. * Perform other duties as assigned. Primary Duties - Laboratory Research Specialist: * Perform all duties of the Laboratory Research Assistant including: * Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications. * Independently perform day to day laboratory research activities such as: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health; collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; diagnostic molecular (ELISA), bacteriological, or biological assays; breeding colonization processes; irradiation of blood products; and executing biochemical or hematopoietic procedures such as: bone marrow aspirations, complete blood count, white cell differential, electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, PCR and DNA extractions, etc.; and may require performing psychological enrichment of certain species. * Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. * Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues. * Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. Presents research findings. * Prepare materials for research studies, including sample collection kits and research documents. * Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques. * Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications - Laboratory Research Assistant: Education:Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Experience:None required. Prior experience in a laboratory environment preferred. Other:May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. * *Minimum Qualifications - Laboratory Research Specialist: Education:Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Experience:Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization. Other:May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: * Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. * Ability to understand and apply approved guidelines of varying research protocols. * Knowledge of best practice in research protocols and procedures. Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgements. Excellent organizational and project management skills. * Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in area of responsibility. Ability to gain knowledge and meet the reporting needs of the university's policies and practices for Institutional Review, Human Protections, Animal * Protections and other related organizations. * Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. * Assume personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learn how to effectively use technology. * Skill in various interviewing techniques. * Skill in data abstraction and entry into study specific database software applications. * Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications. * Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Write and present information in a clear and concise way. * Interpret and understand written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. * Ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects and information obtained. Ability to network with, and provide information to key groups and individuals. * Ability to work as part of a team. * Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience.
