The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicineis seeking aLaboratory Research Specialistto work within the laboratory for Dr. Prajwal Ciryam. The Ciryam Lab studies immune responses to acute brain injury in animal models andhuman samples, with a goal to improve diagnostics and therapeutics in traumatic braininjury and other acute diseases of the brain. The selected candidate for this laboratory research specialist position will be expected to work proactively and independently in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment to advance ethical and rigorous scientific inquiry. The selected candidate must possess excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, independent work habits, and an eagerness to learn. A background in the biological sciences with prior bench laboratory experience, including with rodent handling and surgeries, is required. The candidate's primary responsibilities will include animal care, maintenance, and procedures; routine biological procedures (including but not limited to gel electrophoresis, immunohistochemistry, and PCR); laboratory operations; preparation of buffers and reagents; specimen processing; data collection and recording; review of the scientific literature; and data analysis. The candidate may be involved in mentoring students and other junior laboratory members. In addition to performing and interpreting experiments, the selected candidate will be responsible for routine laboratory maintenance, including ordering supplies, keeping records, and helping to maintain a safe and clean work area. This position functions as a single specialist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to research project(s) and overseeing laboratory research activities. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications. * Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. * Perform laboratory research activities such as: recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, oxidation and transport assays using radio labeled compounds, cultures and specimens; autoradiograms and photomicrographs, animal surgery, etc. * Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research findings. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Experience: Three (3) years experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization. Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: * Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. * Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced routine, and maintenance procedures. * Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty. * Ability to design and recommend changes to research projects and/or area of technical specialty. * Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments. * Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities. * Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications. * Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and dismantles and repair equipment. * Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals. * Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles.
