Johns Hopkins University Laboratory Aide - Summer in Baltimore, Maryland

The Stanley Division of Developmental Neurovirology in the Department of Pediatrics of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is devoted to understanding the role of infection, immunity and the gut-brain axis in the etiology of schizophrenia, mood disorders and other complex brain disorders. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Aid - Summer to work as a casual Laboratory Aide Summer Assistant under supervision of a Faculty Investigator or a Senior Technician on laboratory and informational tasks in support of faculty projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • To perform standard molecular biology, protein biochemistry and other laboratory tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols.

  • To operate requisite laboratory equipment and instruments.

  • To observe and aid in the receipt, organization and maintenance of biospecimens from clinical (human) & preclinical (rodent) studies.

  • To aid in sample preparation, laboratory processing, aliquoting, data collection, data entry, records management, and communicating status of the project to team members.

  • To maintain up-to-date accurate and detailed records of methods, results, and other significant developments in a laboratory notebook.

  • To perform literature searches and prepare presentations in support of existing and up-and-coming projects including manuscripts.

Additional Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft or Mac.

  • Ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.

  • Excellent attention to detail and time management.

  • Outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Generalized knowledge of research and ability to apply basic analytical skills.

  • Ability to work well with others.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications - Specific Requirements

  • Must adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential information.

  • Understands the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of study results, costs, quality of service and scientific research in general.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.

  • Manual dexterity, specifically ability to pipet over several hours at a time

Minimum Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $20.00 HRLY ($15.00 HRLY targeted; Commensurate with experience)
