University of Maryland, Baltimore Epidemiologist (contractual) in Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore Department of Epidemiology is now hiring /multiple/ Epidemiologists to provide epidemiologic and programmatic support for surveillance and special projects of various communicable diseases of interest to the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau and potentially other bureaus within MDH. Responsibilities will include conducting surveillance and outbreak investigations for COVID-19 and other infections of public health importance; managing, refining and analyzing surveillance data including both epidemiologic and laboratory data; developing special projects based on the surveillance or outbreak activities; writing scientific and other reports; and communicating program information to local, state and federal stakeholders. /This is an on-site position with minimal telework opportunities. This//role may be at the Epidemiologist or Senior Epidemiologist level depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate(s)./ Program activities will be conducted in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other state health departments and public health laboratories, and other federal, state and local partners. These program activities will complement the surveillance and outbreak investigation functions of the MDH Prevention and Health Promotion Administration's Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau, whose purpose is to prevent and/or reduce the incidence of communicable diseases in Maryland. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. * *Essential Functions: * Surveillance and Data Management Activities: Support COVID-19 and other infectious disease surveillance processing and quality assurance activities; assist with infectious disease case investigations including reviewing and summarizing information from medical and other records; enter data and ensure that all required data fields are complete for all cases of these illnesses identified within the surveillance area; help transmit data to CDC and the Maryland Health Information Exchange on a regular basis; review exception reports and correct electronic data accordingly; and participate in surveillance conference calls and program meetings. * Outbreak investigations: Support and conduct COVID-19 and other infectious disease outbreak investigations, including entering and managing outbreak-related data. * Quality Assurance Activities: Assist in the review of laboratory reports and outbreak investigation data to ensure complete and accurate data; help conduct laboratory or other surveys; follow up with relevant laboratories or local health departments to obtain missing laboratory data, and to help ensure important surveillance or outbreak clinical specimens are submitted to the MDH public health laboratory when indicated. * Surveillance and Outbreak Special Project Protocols: In collaboration with the MDH, CDC and other partners, participate in the development/revision of surveillance criteria; assist in the development of special project protocols; and develop plans for implementing these protocols in Maryland; assist with implementation of various special projects, including: case and control recruitment according to project protocol; collect project data through patient interviews, medical record reviews, surveys, sample collection, or other means according to project protocol; coordinate with MDH laboratory personnel; enter and clean data; and transmit data to CDC and other partners in a timely manner. * Analysis and Presentation of Data: Conduct basic analysis of surveillance, outbreak and special projects data using statistical software such as SAS or STATA: and assist with the development of oral and written summaries and data visualizations for a variety of internal and external audiences. * Programmatic Reports: Assist in the development, distribution, and follow-up of monthly data and programmatic quality assurance reports. * Participate in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB) Activities: Participate in IDEORB meetings and response activities, including the on-call system, and assist with other lDEORB projects as needed. * Participate in Educational Activities: Attend continuing education programs, seminars and meetings as required. * Performs other duties as assigned. /Epidemiologist/ Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Health Science, or related discipline. Coursework in infectious diseases, epidemiology, biostatistics preferred. /Senior Epidemiologist/ Master's degree in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, public health, health sciences or services and two (2) years of experience analyzing studies using a range of statistical techniques in a related environment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Working knowledge of SAS, Stata, R and other statistical software, preferred. * Ability to communicate scientific and technical ideas both verbally and in writing to a lay audience and an audience of healthcare professionals; writing samples may be requested. * Ability to work independently. * Background coursework in microbiology and knowledge of medical terminology preferred. * Knowledge of computer software, statistical software. * Knowledge of epidemiological research, methodology, epidemiologic data collection procedures, and epidemiologic study and analysis design. * Ability to manage projects or tasks within a project that involves a multi-discipline team. * Ability to communicate scientific and technical ideas both verbally and in writing appropriate to the audience—with scientific jargon for other researchers and in an accessible manner for non-scientists; writing samples may be requested. * Ability to work independently. * Knowledge of microbiology, and medical terminology preferred.
