M&T Bank Credit Quality Assurance Manager - CRE/C&I in Baltimore, Maryland

Overview:

This position operates in the 2nd LOD as part of Credit Risk Management department and is responsible for leading a team of up to five analysts in evaluating the quality of credit risk assessments in the 1 LOD and 2nd LOD as well as evaluating the accuracy of PDs and LDs of a CRE and C&I portfolio.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Credit Quality Assurance Manager in Credit Risk Management. This role involves evaluating and ensuring the quality of credit risk assessments in the first and second line as well as evaluating the accuracy of PDs and LDs.

  • Lead and implement any credit quality assurance activities including independent testing required for M&T’s 2nd LOD processes such as Credit Decisioning and Special Assets. Lead and implement credit quality assurance activities across other potential functions of CRM department as required.

  • Partner with the first line to understand key risks, and monitor significant changes including organizational structure, policies, processes, technology etc., and ensure associated impacts are accounted.

  • Identify and monitor potential risks emanating from changes in the external environment such as emerging risks, legislative and regulatory changes, technology and marketplace changes, and social and economic factors.

  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank Brand

  • Maintain M&T Internal Control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned and contribute to other CRM projects and initiatives as required.

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Extensive Experience in CRE or C&I analysis:

  • Extensive Experience in Commercial Real Estate (CRE) or Commercial and Industrial (C&I) analysis. This experience can be gained in the first line (underwriting, portfolio management) or second line (credit approver).

  • Experience in credit risk review covering these areas is also highly desirable.

  • Ability to rigorously review and challenge the inputs used in credit risk models and the resulting ratings. Expert level understanding of regulatory ratings.

  • The ability to assess the quality of analysis to ensure risks are properly identified. Evaluate the suitability and effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies identified by analysts.

  • Prior managerial experience.

  • Strong Written and Verbal Communication Skills:

  • Exceptional ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.

  • Ability to clearly articulate complex credit risk issues and assessments to various stakeholders including senior management.

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure thorough analysis and accurate risk assessments.

  • Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical skills to dissect and interpret complex financial data and credit risk models.

  • Ability to identify trends, anomalies, and potential risks within large datasets.

  • Critical Thinking: Proficient in critical thinking to challenge assumptions and methodologies used in credit assessments. Ability to propose alternative solutions and improvements to existing processes.

  • Problem Solving Skills: Excellent problem-solving skills to address and resolve issues identified during the review process. Ability to think strategically and provide actionable recommendations for risk mitigation.

  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with various departments, including underwriting, portfolio management, and senior management. Ability to foster a cooperative and productive working environment.

  • Regulatory Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of banking regulations and compliance requirements related to credit risk management.

  • Ability to ensure that all credit risk activities align with regulatory standards and internal policies.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing regulatory landscapes and evolving credit risk management practices. Willingness to continuously update knowledge and skills to stay current with industry developments.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:

Manage a team of up to 5 subject matter professionals.

  • Provide coaching and mentoring to the staff, Review and approve results.

  • Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management, employee development and termination.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline (e.g., Finance, Accounting, Economics) and minimum nine years’ relevant experience including a minimum of six years experience in the finance industry,

OR In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum 13 years’ work experience and/or higher education and experience with a minimum of 9 years’ relevant experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of financial principles, regulatory & compliance issues facing the banking industry.

Experience in at least one corporate level and one divisional level area.

Experience leading cross functional project teams; ability to work across all divisions.

Strong written presentation skills, personal computers and MS Office Suite

Education and Experience Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline (e.g., Finance, Accounting, Economics) and minimum ten years’ relevant experience including a minimum of six years’ experience in the finance industry.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $145,114.31 - $241,857.18 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
