Red River Systems Engineer in Austin, Texas

Position Summary:

The Systems Engineer’s primary responsibility is to work within the current IaaMS support team under the Lead Architect, on all technical aspects within the contract scope supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Will specifically assist in deploying NetApp storage arrays and support data migrations between Cisco and NetApp within a customer managed VMWare environment. Act as a NetApp storage and Cisco Infrastructure practice lead for a large refresh project supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Primary duties include the initial configuration and post deployment support of NetApp All-Flash Storage platform, Cisco Nexus switches, Cisco Fabric Interconnect (FI) switches, and multi-vendor Server Infrastructure in a pre-stage, test, and production environment at VA facilities across the US. Additionally, the Systems Engineer will act as a mentor by supporting junior engineers during the installation and configuration process. The Systems Engineer will implement and support best practice solutions and develop repeatable processes around the installation of the architected solution.

Primary Position Tasks:

• Install, configure, troubleshoot, and support Cisco, Dell, and HPe based server technology.

• Install, configure, troubleshoot, and support NetApp All-Flash A/C-Series and Dell PowerStore storage.

• Install, configure, troubleshoot, and support Cisco Nexus 93xxx and Fabric Interconnect switches with management and security enablement.

• Rack and stack hardware components and interconnect cabling.

• Support Jr Engineers with the understanding of server/storage builds and deployment.

• Liaison with program architects to verify system design/configuration for enterprise compute, storage, networking, and management.

• Troubleshoot VMware ESXi 7.0 and above in support of FlexPod architectural best practices, as well as VMWare for other server architectures.

• Provide weekly/monthly capacity and performance reports on server and storage infrastructure utilizing Dell SRM and NetApp ONTAP.

• Meet with VA customers on assigned projects.

• Act as primary technical lead for multi-OEM support cases.

• Support Test and Evaluation (T&E) of deployed solutions.

• Assist in developing documentation for internal and customer use:

o Run books, configuration guides, and process workflows

o Repeatable and reusable deployment documentation for installation and configuration of network and security elements to function, and monitoring/alerting enablement

• Other business duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Certification/Experience Requirements:

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in IT

• AWS Best Practices related to S3 Storage

• Detailed knowledge and experience in relation to data center architecture and technologies for compute, storage, and networking

• Build, maintain, and administer FlexPod environments

• Familiarity with VMware vCenter and ESXi 7.0 and above

• Familiarity with server, storage, and network management protocols and technologies

• Familiarity with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery (DR) particularly with storage replication, AWS, hybrid, virtualized environments, and related technologies.

• Fundamental working knowledge of network, server, virtualization, and cloud concepts

Preferred Education/Certification/Experience:

• NetApp Certified Data Administrator, ONTAP

• VMware Certified Professional (VCP 6.X and above)

• Amazon Web Services Cloud Practitioner

• Other relevant AWS and/or VMWare certifications

• Associate or Bachelor Degree

• Successfully deployed and managed a validated FlexPod datacenter solution

• Prior military or government contract experience preferred

• Automation tooling:

o Ansible

o Puppet

o Chef

Essential Elements (Mental; Physical; Equipment used):

This position requires the ability to distribute copper and fiber cabling in datacenters/network cabinets; install server, storage, switches, and lift up to 75-pound servers. Work in a high-paced environment with other IT professionals, supporting critical government agency work.

Special Requirements:

Travel to regional customer sites as required to support Red River business initiatives. Travel up to 50% of the time to customer sites nationwide for 1st year then drops down to 10-15%. US Citizen, ability to obtain a minimum of a Public Trust, and willingness to obtain a higher level security clearance.
