Job/Position DescriptionUnder limited supervision of the Manager of the Chronic Disease Epidemiology (CDE) Branch, performs data analysis and surveillance related to chronic disease programs such as hypertension, heart disease and stroke, and the diabetes prevention and control program. Responsible for identifying and examining various data sources for major chronic diseases and risk factors. Work involves data collection, management, statistical data analysis, and presentation of the information to a variety of audiences. Writes data reports as required by CDE branch and the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention (HPCDP) Section programs. Works closely with CDE epidemiologistsand#146; team lead, HPCDP section program staff and other internal and external partners. Identify trends in chronic disease burden and assist in implementing plans for data analyses and dissemination. Works with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job Functions(40%) Plans, designs, identifies, and implements data collection methods to support surveillance activities of chronic disease programs such as hypertension, heart disease and stroke, and diabetes. Identifies data sources, obtains data and conduct comprehensive analysis on existing and new data sources including but not limited to Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, hospital discharge data, mortality data, population data, and specific program related data sources. Develops data collection tools, collects data from contractors, monitors quality and timeliness, run data analysis, and prepare reports. Coordinates these activities with CDE branchand#146;s epidemiologistsand#146; team lead and the manager of CDE on an ongoing basis.(25%) Coordinates with CDE epidemiologistsand#146; team lead and CDE manager and designs and writes reports, data briefs, fact sheets, create GIS maps and prepares presentations in order to disseminate hypertension, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, and other chronic disease program data as needed. Uses appropriate data visualization methods and reporting language for dissemination of the findings. Provides updates for the program website with latest data. Presents the data to internal and external partners and stakeholders. (15%) Addresses ad-hoc data requests from chronic disease programs, CVD council, media, and other internal and external partners in a timely and accurate manner. Assists the CDE manager and other leadership team within HPCDP section with legislative and other data requests. Assists with grant writing process.(10%) Coordinates the implementation of surveillance projects related to chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, and other programs. Oversees the progress of these activities and provides technical assistance to program and their community partners.(5%) Prepares formal contributions to public health sciences, submits abstracts to state and national conferences related to epidemiology of chronic diseases. Writes articles and manuscripts related to chronic diseases in Texas for publication, newsletters, and journals as appropriate.(5%) Performs other duties as assigned, but not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supportive role to meet the agencyand#146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
