The Kempe Center was the first academic center in the U.S. to focus on the prevention and treatment of child maltreatment. For the past 50 years, Kempe has promoted understanding, knowledge, and best practices to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect globally. Today we honor our legacy while looking ahead for ways to transform our field. It is our mission to improve the well-being of children and families. We ensure the integration of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of our work by way of discovery, leadership, action, accountability, evaluation, and transformation. In this way and through our work, we strengthen families, communities and the systems that serve them. We believe that abuse and neglect are preventable, and people are resilient. We are curious. We take a stand. We test assumptions. Our leadership in advocacy, research, education, and clinical work drives innovative strategies that transform the field. We are a catalyst, connecting people, information, and best practices to translate knowledge into action. Following the seminal work of Dr. C. Henry Kempe, the Kempe Center has built a reputation as a world leader in the prevention, identification, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Through an equity lens, we lead through advocacy, research, education and clinical work to transform lives. Center impact areas include evidence-based and research informed approaches, transformative research, connecting with communities, workforce education and innovation, JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion), advocacy and clinical services. Some examples of our work in those areas include developing and testing new prevention and treatment programs, overseeing the implementation of established evidence-based programs, evaluating and diagnosing children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect, training child welfare/protection professionals, and conducting studies that inform program development and public policy. Through funded projects and other collaborations, the Center has partnerships with the Department of Psychiatry, School of Public Health, the Kempe Foundation, the State of Colorado, and the National Foundation to End Child Abuse and Neglect (EndCAN) to name a few. The Kempe Center is a section of the Department of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine. The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus is a public research university serving more than 18,000 students. We award nearly 4,000 degrees each year, including more graduate and professional degrees than any other Colorado institution. With our solid academic reputation, award-winning faculty and renowned researchers, we offer more than 140 highly rated degree programs through 13 schools and colleges. The university receives over $400 million in research awards each year. In addition to the wide array of health-related programs and facilities offered at CU Anschutz in Aurora.
