Department of Pediatrics, Section of Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant/Cellular Therapies has an opening for a full-time Open Rank: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position.

Nature of Work:

The Section of Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant/Cellular Therapies is seeking a Solid Tumor physician to serve as Solid Tumor Program Leader. The successful candidate will have a schedule working with other attending physicians on the Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT-CT services in the supervision of advance practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in organizing each day's inpatient rounds, outpatient clinics, procedures, and family conferences. The schedule is such that there is dedicated time for academic activity in Clinical or Translational research in any of the specialties, or other interests as developed by the candidate and agreed upon by the Section leadership. You will have approximately 55% of your time spent conducting clinical activities in the inpatient and outpatient setting, 20% of your time as Solid Tumor Program Leader, and 25% of your time spent as a faculty member conducting research and/or program development and collaboration activities. Additional protected time is available for funded research activities if funding is available.

Examples of Work Performed:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide independent care of pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT-CT patients on the inpatient hospital service;

  • Provide independent care of pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT-CT patients in the outpatient clinic and infusion center;

  • Communicate with referring physicians and other providers regarding shared patients on Hem/Onc/BMT-CT service and in the institution;

  • Lead Hem/Onc/BMT-CT advance practice providers (APPs: physician's assistants and nurse practitioners) in the care of both inpatients and outpatients;

  • Provide education and supervision to medical students, residents and fellows in the inpatient and outpatient settings;

  • Write admission, discharge, acute care, and chemotherapy orders in collaboration with other physicians and advanced practice providers;

  • Provide coordination of care between the inpatient and outpatient settings;

  • Participate in the treatment of patients on clinical research protocols with an emphasis on conducting investigator-initiated research studies in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT-CT;

  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary care with other hospital and outpatient services;

  • Coordinate and assist with education of new patients and families;

  • Participate in Quality/Safety, Process Improvement and Community Outreach and Engagement initiatives and activities;

  • Provide educational support to nursing and other staff;

  • Perform procedures independently:

  • Lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy administration

  • Bone marrow aspirations/biopsies

  • Skin or simple tissue biopsies

  • Ommaya access with chemotherapy administration

Program Leader Responsibilities:

  • Administer the clinical programs with responsibility for initiatives focused on best outcomes, patient, family, and referring physician satisfaction, quality improvement, and administrative oversight of inpatient services and outpatient clinic for the Solid Tumor Program;

  • Develop and maintain a national reputation for Solid Tumor clinical and research programs, education and advocacy;

  • Continue the development of an outstanding research program that spans basic science to clinical research;

  • Solid Tumor program development, including faculty recruitment together with the Section Chief, education and mentoring of fellows and junior faculty, development and integration with other Program Leaders and Section and Hospital Leadership in the Section of Peds Hem/Onc/BMT-CT to implement hospital and University policy related to all aspects of research and patient care;

  • Continuation of excellent clinical service that is safe, has high quality and includes a high level of satisfaction for patients, families and referring physicians;

  • Collaborate with other Program Leaders to develop, participate in, and collaborate with clinical research to optimize patient outcomes and academic productivity in the local, national and international arenas;

  • Develop, operationalize, and update care guidelines to ensure consistent and evidence-based care of patients with solid tumors;

  • Collaborate with colleagues to publish experience and patient outcomes and disseminate experience to advance the care of children, adolescents and young adults with solid tumors.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established at:

  • Assistant Professor: $163,000 to $190,000

  • Associate Professor: $201,000 to $250,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range ( or hiring range ) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Assistant Professor:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO); must be board certified/eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

  • Continuous Maintenance of Certification is required.

  • Active Colorado state license and DEA certification, or ability to obtain prior to employment

  • Training and expertise in pediatric Oncology in solid tumor oncology.

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a clinical setting.

  • Meet all Children's Hospital Colorado credentialing requirements and continuous active medical staff status.

Associate Professor:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO); must be board certified/eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

  • Continuous Maintenance of Certification is required.

  • Active Colorado state license and DEA certification, or ability to obtain prior to employment

  • Training and expertise in pediatric Oncology in solid tumor oncology.

  • Minimum 6-7 years of professional experience in clinical setting.

  • Meet all Children's Hospital Colorado credentialing requirements and continuous active medical staff status.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado.

  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in independent care of pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT patients for at least five years after completion of Fellowship training.

  • Ability to independently care for and manage complex Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT patients in an academic setting.

  • High professionalism, customer service skills, team-based patient care, and ability to meet productivity targets are expected.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pediatric solid tumor and/or drug development subspecialty training preferred (can substitute for a year of experience listed above).

  • Clinical trial experience as a principal investigator with Good Clinical Practice, Institutional Review Board, and Office of Human Research Protection training certifications.

  • Experience with organizational or programmatic leadership including leadership training and professional development activities.

  • Record of sustained independent funding of clinical research or laboratory work, with preference given to candidates who have secured at least one cycle of renewed funding if research protection is requested.
