Come join Central Fleet Management, the team that keeps the State of Maine light duty vehicle fleet on the road. Whether it be Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, Marine Resources, Human Services, or any other agency in State government, Central Fleet Management needs a Public Safety Mechanic to setup, repair, and maintain the State fleet of highly diverse light duty vehicles!

You will be part of a team of fleet professionals, and service a wide variety of fleet customers. Our team centrally manages the entire State fleet of light duty vehicles, allowing the agencies to focus on their services to the public.

Once employed by the State of Maine, opportunities for advancement are available, both within our organization and across other State departments.

This work involves the preventive maintenance and repair of various types of light duty vehicles including vehicles performing public safety and other emergency services.  Work includes diagnosing mechanical and electrical repairs to these vehicle types including all related hardware and software malfunctions. Work is performed under limited supervision.

As a Public Safety Mechanic, you will:

  • Service, overhaul, and repair a variety of automotive and law enforcement vehicles and equipment for a large fleet in order to maintain vehicles and equipment in a safe, operable, and dependable condition and maximize availability.

  • Operate the latest computer diagnostic tools and software to diagnose, repair, and reprogram computer components on a variety of vehicle and equipment types.

  • Diagnose, reprogram, install, repair and adjusts emergency lights and sirens, various vehicle components and systems for safe & efficient operation of fleet vehicles and related emergency equipment.

  • Diagnose, repair and rebuild vehicle engines, transmissions and other drive train components.

  • Road test vehicles to accurately diagnosis and repair the entire vehicle and all accessories/components

  • Organize, requisition, and maintain parts, tires, supplies and equipment to ensure adequate inventory.

  • Completes repair orders for each vehicle serviced, listing all parts, labor, description of work done, and vehicle information to maintain accurate vehicle and equipment history.

    Successful candidates should have:

  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic /electric (ABS) and air brake system operation and repair.

  • Knowledge of steering and suspension system parts, maintenance, and repair.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.

  • Knowledge of computerized diagnostic systems.

  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations pertinent to vehicle and garage safety precautions of the mechanic trade

  • Knowledge of state inspection laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.

  • Knowledge of basic cutting and welding techniques.

  • Ability to troubleshoot computer, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures in vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to repair a variety of mechanical and emergency vehicle equipment.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to work independently in the repair and maintenance of automotive and associated emergency equipment.

    For this position candidates must meet the following experience criteria:

  • Four (4) years’ experience and/or education in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience repairing hybrid, plug in electric (PHEV) or fully electric (BEV) vehicles .

      Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle driver’s license as issued by the State of Maine.
