Central Maine Medical Center Medical Assistant in Auburn, Maine

Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant is responsible and accountable for the support of the delivery of patient care in the physician office setting. Demonstrates outstanding customer service skills on behalf of Central Maine Heart Associates. The Medical Assistant practices in accordance with CMHA’s Clinical Policies and Procedures and operates within the American Association of Medical Assistants guidelines. The Medical Assistant promotes team work with staff, physicians, and personnel in other departments; and supports the values of CMHA. Provides direct and indirect patient care in the practice. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with a minimum of supervision. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with Clinical Coordinator, Team Leader, and/or Practice Manager about changes in patient’s status, and results of diagnostic studies.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides and ensures direct and optimal patient care under the supervision of the Clinical Coordinator/Team Leader, and/or Practice Manager.

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform office diagnostic testing.

  • Answers telephone calls in a professional manner; refers patient problems to a nurse or providers; schedules patient appointments.

  • Maintains accurate and continued documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, and responses.

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family.

  • Maintains current knowledge of medications/vaccinations and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.

  • Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of lab, x-ray, and other testing requirements, requisitions.

  • Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with practice standards.

  • Assists with monitoring for an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.

  • Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.

  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve organizational objectives, maintain good employee relations.

  • Demonstrates the ability to assist providers with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.

  • Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of certification.

  • Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatment and special procedure.

  • Maintains infection control standards for exam/procedure rooms, cleans, disinfects, etc.

  • Maintains office instruments, and equipment.

  • Responds appropriately to the patient in an emergency or physically distressful situations.

  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Education and Experience:

  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.

  • Must have an Associates’ Degree from of an accredited school of medical assistance or a certificate in Medical Assisting or currently hold a valid certification, (CMA, RMA, CCMA) with two or more years of experience.

  • You must have one (1) the following credentials or be eligible to obtain 1 (one) of the following credentials, based upon the credentialing organization’s eligibility requirements, within 90 days of hire:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants

  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association

  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – The American Registry of Medical Assistants

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Strong written and verbal skills.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards
