Job Description

The Animal Industry Division of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is committed to protecting animal health in order to safeguard animal agriculture, the food supply, public health, and animal well-being. The purpose of this position is to assist with cleaning and disinfecting livestock handling equipment to prevent transmission from farm to farm of bovine tuberculosis and other animal diseases. There may be limited time to assist in animal handling and restraint during animal testing for bovine tuberculosis and performance of regulatory assistance at the local livestock market (Northern Michigan Livestock in Gaylord) especially on weeks of feeder sales.

One year of experience performing duties involving the use of hand tools and motorized machinery equivalent to a Laborer 5.

Alternate Education and Experience

Some positions within this classification series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.

Some positions in this classification series may also be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides, which may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

Vacation and Sick Leave:Eligible full-time employees receive between15 and 35 personal daysand13 sick daysper year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays:Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
