Position Summary

The Office of Operations and Business Affairs is seeking an Insurance and Risk Manager to join their team. This position is responsible for the leadership, innovation, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor the Institution’s operational and strategic risk. The position also functions to support the Institution in the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management.

General Duties:

  • Overall responsibility for Insurance and Risk Management, and Business Continuity Planning activities for the organization.

  • Responsible for leading the process of identifying, measuring and managing insurable or hazard risks, developing reports and plans, and analyzing risk/insurance problems and overseeing the implementation of risk solutions that help optimize operations.

  • Serve as primary point of contact with brokers, third party administrators and insurance carriers to manage and mitigate risk across all lines, including but not limited to D&O, general, professional, cyber, fiduciary and employment liability, and workers compensation.

  • Receive and process Institutional department incident reporting. Provide adequate and timely notice to appropriate insurance carriers of all incidents involving the Institution’s assets or stakeholders. Monitor claims activity for erosion of deductibles or SIR . Manage and maintain claim databases and provide to management as requested.

  • Identify areas of risk to the Institution and partner with leadership to develop best practices. Identify, develop, and maintain documentation of Institutional assets and exposures to loss.

  • Conduct at least semi-annual meetings with brokers and carriers to develop risk mitigation strategies. Conduct at least semi-annual meetings with appropriate Institutional personnel and monitor internal Institutional communications to provide accurate and current risk details. Review, verify and compile any changes in risk profiles and information that could affect coverage needs.

  • Lead the Institution in annual insurance renewals, including preparing all renewal applications for property, liability, casualty, cyber, malpractice, and other insurance. Compile and provide complete and accurate insurance applications and supporting documentation for all coverage sought.

  • Serve as the resource person for all insurance related questions. Manage responses to requests for Certificates of Insurance and Loss History. Assist with responses to subpoenas, document requests, wage garnishments, and document hold memos.

  • Manager Broker issuance of Certificates of Insurance, Memorandums of Insurance, and auto ID cards as requested on an ad hoc basis as well as post renewal issuance.

  • Assist with exposure collection, binding, policy, endorsement and audit tracking.

  • Maintain schedules of insurance, premium payments and expiration control log. Initiate and submit invoices to ensure timely submissions and payments.

  • Review insurance, indemnity and hold harmless terms within contracts related to supplier, vendor, client, and landlord agreements to ensure compliance with the corporate insurance program as well as vendor requirements. Provide waivers of insurance requirements where permitted.

  • Review and maintain proper electronic and hard copy files of the insurance policy documentation consisting of proposals, binders, policies and endorsements, and assure that the policies issued meet the broker’s and insurer’s proposals and commitments.

  • Ensure the organization has in place appropriate risk management policies and strategies that are following applicable regulations, rating agency standards, and the strategic imperatives of the organization. Develop and implement compliance strategies to address complex circumstances.

  • Establish the Enterprise Risk Management architecture for the Institution. Oversee or monitor all operational risk management activities of the organization.

  • Develop and monitor effectiveness of Enterprise Risk Management tools, templates, practices, and policies to analyze and report enterprise risks, and to manage risks according to best practices in an enterprise risk management framework.

  • Oversee investigations of auto, property, general liability, and subrogation from inception until the end. Assist with Safety Inspections and Site Visits. Develop investigative procedures when a claim is filed to determine liability and appropriate reserves of liability exposure and work with legal counsel as needed.

  • Provide leadership to the Institution Risk Enterprise Management Committee, that will oversee the enterprise risk management process and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Plan, coordinate and perform mandatory Center for Medicare & Medicaid ( CMS ) claim reporting.

  • Monitor and analyze risks within the Institution’s business units and report on these risks for update to the AVP and the EVP for Operations.

  • Provide quarterly updates on pending coverage disputes and/or gaps, to be presented to the Board of Trustees.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 3-5 years of experience in insurance and risk management with exposure to complex accounts.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in healthcare and/or higher education environment.

  • Certification in Risk Management, Insurance Compliance, or other related area.

Immunization Requirements

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
