Serco is currently seeking a full time Environmental Data Validation Chemist. This is an exciting opportunity that involves data review and validation of USEPA Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) data for environmental projects. As the environmental data validation chemist, you will primarily perform data review and validation on organic (volatiles, semivolatile extractables, pesticides, and PCBs) and dioxin/PCB congener data using the USEPA National Functional Guidelines (NFGs) for data review and USEPA Region 4 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). You will occasionally be tasked to review ICP/AES and ICP/MS metals data as well.

Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD) in Athens, Georgia. Here you’ll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team (ESAT) helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

In this role, you will:
Perform data review and validation on organic (volatiles, semivolatile extractables, pesticides, and PCBs) and dioxin/PCB congener data submitted by Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) using the USEPA National Functional Guidelines (NFGs) for data review and USEPA Region 4 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Perform data review and validation on ICP/AES and ICP/MS metals data submitted by Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) using the USEPA National Functional Guidelines (NFGs) for data review
Prepare comprehensive and professionally written reports on review findings
Handle electronic data from and between various platforms and data bases
Perform SOP and other documents/methods review when needed
Monitor workflow for incoming samples and manage backlog and due dates
Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by supervisor
Trend and monitor key performance metrics
Communicate effectively with EPA staff
Qualifications
To be successful in this roll, you will have:
A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related science discipline
At least 4 years of directly related laboratory analytical and/or data review/validation experience
Experience performing GC and GC/MS analysis using CLP SOWs, USEPA SW846, and/or USEPA drinking water methods for volatiles, semivolatile extractables, pesticides, and PCBs
Must be at least 21 years of age
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Certificate from EPA’s Personal Security Branch
Demonstrate excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills
Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines
Experience in analysis and interpretation of data
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations
Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail
Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
Good diligence and ability to document all progress meticulously (training provided as to requirements)
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work extensively using a computer screen and keyboard
Additional desired experience and skills:
Experience in QC programs and performing data review and validation
Experience reviewing or analyzing Dioxin and PCB congeners using HRGCMS, metals using ICP/AES and/or ICP/MS, mercury by Cold Vapor, and/or classical inorganic parameters including Hexavalent Chromium, TOC, TDS/TSS/TS, and Cyanide, etc.
Technical writing experience
Good attention to detail and be able to document all activities well (training will be provided as to requirements)
Strong technical writing skills
Excellent cross-functional team participation skills
Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
Ability to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand
Ability to successfully communicate with peers, managers, and clients
