Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Space Subject Matter Expert with demonstrated experience supporting DoD and/or IC space systems acquisitions with exposure to test and evaluation (T&E), prototypes, and emerging technologies.

As a Senior Space Subject Matter Expert, you will:

  • Work within a small team within Office of the Undersecretary of Defense (Research and Engineering) (OUSD(R&E)) focused on understanding DoD space architectures, capabilities, and technologies in order to provide effective DoD oversight of space acquisition programs.

  • Work for the Deputy Director for Space, engage with priority space systems acquisition programs to provide an independent analysis of program status, technological maturation, and risk areas.

A week in the life of a Senior Space Subject Matter Expert:

  • Support small-team efforts to analyze programs and characterize risk tied to program acquisition milestones. Collaborate with space programs across DoD/IC to understand their efforts including program plans, acquisition plans, technical approach and maturity, schedule, risk, and other aspects in order to present status to OUSD(R&E) leadership.

  • Effectively communicate program status, issues, risks, plans to executive leadership in narrative, briefing, and oral form.

  • Evaluate and understand the technology and engineering capabilities central to space programs; understand how space capabilities impact and support the Joint Warfighter.

  • Review and assess Test and Evaluation Master Plans (TEMPs), developmental test plans, System Engineering Plans (SEPs), Lifecycle Sustainment Plan (LCSPs), Acquisition Decision Memoranda (ADMs), Acquisition Baselines and Strategies, and other milestone decision documents.

  • Evaluate test results, schedules, resources, and technological risks for program reviews.

  • Provide working-level integrated product teams (WIPTs) Test and Evaluation, and systems engineering support. Support Independent Technical Risk Assessments (ITRAs) and Development Test Assessments (DTAs).

  • Develop papers, reports, and briefings targeted to senior decision makers.

  • Understand DTE&A and R&E policy; provide cogent policy recommendations on DT&E policy.

  • Assist and prepare presentations and reports to DoD leadership and outside DoD.

  • Assist, prepare and conduct meetings for DTE&A.

Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in science (physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or related field) or engineering (aerospace, electrical, or similar)

  • 15+ years of experience supporting DoD/IC Space programs and the DoD acquisition process

  • Understanding and knowledge of advanced systems development, systems engineering, and modern space programs.

  • Experience in directly supporting space programs in moving through stages of design, development, and T&E to the successful delivery of mission capability.

  • Experience on space programs working requirements specification, concept development, design, fabrication, and full life-cycle operations.

  • Understand software development for space programs.

  • Experience supporting OSD or similar HQ organizations.

  • Experience working in one or more key focus areas: remote sensing, space control, ground-based sensing of space objects, autonomous systems, threat systems, exotic/exquisite sensing capabilities, pace-based PNT and alternate PNT.

Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
