The Accounting Department Culture:

An average day:

As GOVCON Accountant III, you will independently handle complex accounting tasks and payroll processes in a government contracting environment, ensuring compliance with regulations and timely financial reporting. Working closely with the Controller, this role supports accurate financial operations and maintains adherence to industry standards and internal procedures. In this position you will:

  • Prepare and submit invoices for government contracts, coordinating with project teams to resolve billing discrepancies.

  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, research and resolve variances, and maintain documentation for audit readiness.

  • Process Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable transactions, including reviewing vendor statements and tracking outstanding balances.

  • Maintain and optimize the timekeeping and expense system (such as Unanet) to ensure accurate labor and cost tracking in accordance with DCAA requirements.

  • Create monthly journal entries, accruals, and account analyses, supporting timely month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Compile and organize audit schedules, collaborating with external auditors to facilitate effective reviews.

  • Generate financial reports and schedules for internal management and government agencies, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Contribute to cost accounting methodologies by reviewing overhead and direct cost allocations for accuracy and consistency.

  • Monitor budget-to-actual variances, investigate discrepancies, and communicate findings to the Controller for timely resolution.

  • Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll, verifying all inputs in Unanet and Paycor for accuracy and compliance.

  • Support the development of internal controls, recommending improvements to streamline accounting processes and enhance data integrity.

  • Collaborate with team members and leadership on special projects and financial analyses as needed to promote organizational goals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in an Accounting discipline and no less than five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience with at least 2 years of experience in a Federal Contract environment.

  • Experience with government contracting (GOVCON) accounting standards, processes, and procedures, knowledge of DCAA requirements is required.

  • Thorough understanding of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) implementation and maintenance per FAR Part 30, including the application of relevant federal regulations and compliance requirements, to ensure accurate cost allocation and reporting is required

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws relating to payroll.

  • Proven experience utilizing Unanet (or similar project-based ERP solutions) and HRIS/Payroll systems for seamless time tracking, cost accounting, and financial reporting.

  • Intermediate to advanced computer literacy and proficiency in using MS office programs and accounting and HR information systems.

  • Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills. Must possess a high degree of interpersonal relationship skills and can work and relate well with co-workers and managers.

  • Excellent problem solving/judgment skills, with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task and work independently.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines.

Other Requirements:

  • Occasional travel to a Company location (Weaverville, NC or Greenville, SC) for meetings and possible out of state travel for training/professional development opportunities.
