Institute for Justice Activism Fellow in Arlington, Virginia

The Institute for Justice, the National Law Firm for Liberty, is seeking candidates for its highly selective Activism   Fellowship program. Fellows work closely with IJ’s activism and coalitions team, which fights to change the world at the grassroots through outreach, community organizing, training, coalition building, legislative advocacy, and public demonstrations—a unique brand of activism that reaches vulnerable communities that are subject to the government’s abuse of power.

This growing team specializes in innovative responses to local needs—and we get results. Whether it’s navigating legislative or regulatory hurdles, hosting fun community events to generate support, building coalitions that span the political and philosophical spectrum, writing in-depth reports or drafting postcards, canvassing door-to-door, or leading demonstrations--helping our activists with their real-world problems is at the heart of everything we do every single day.

Fellows assist with exciting outreach projects and research, help track controversies and legislation across the country, and provide valuable support to staff on activism campaigns. Fellows will gain unique experience on the front lines of the fight for liberty with experienced activists and litigators, and have the opportunity to travel for key events with team members to experience IJ activism on the ground.

Opportunities include:

  • Collaboration with activists, attorneys, and researchers engaging in cutting-edge constitutional advocacy

  • Travel to assist with select activism trainings and public demonstrations

  • Explore new, innovative strategies

  • Media publication

  • Writing mentorship

  • On-camera communications training

  • Networking opportunities

Candidates should possess exceptional research and writing skills, have strong interpersonal skills, be attentive to detail, have the ability to think outside of the box, and have a commitment to individual freedom as well as an interest in property rights,  educational choice, and economic liberty. Spanish proficiency is helpful but not required.

Benefits:

  • Hybrid work schedule, requiring three days in-office each week; four fully remote weeks a year

  • Flexible work hours with our core business hours of 10am and 4pm

  • Smart casual dress code; casual Fridays

  • Health, Dental, and Vision insurance (IJ covers 100% of individual premiums)

  • Free Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life insurance plans

  • HSA employer contributions

  • 401(k) with employer matches

  • Generous PTO including a paid personal day and 12 paid holidays

We are recruiting Fellows on a rolling basis. The duration of the Activism Fellowship is flexible, although preference is given to applicants seeking a year-long opportunity. Shorter terms will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The compensation for this role is provided in the form of a stipend.

To apply, please submit a resume, writing sample, and cover letter detailing why you're interested in working for the Institute for Justice.
