Job Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for the safety and cleanliness of Cowley College buildings. The hours for this position are Monday Friday 4:00 pm to 1:00 am, with weekend events.
Position Duties:
- Clean assigned offices, classrooms, restrooms and lobby areas using
the proper custodial cleaning methods for sanitizing, mopping,
sweeping, dusting, etc.
- Classrooms: vacuum, clean tabletops, clean whiteboards, straighten chairs and tables, empty trash
- Offices: Clean all surfaces without personal items (no desktops), vacuum, empty trash, dust, clean windows/doors.
- Cafeteria area (Short Building): floors, table tops, empty trash, general cleaning.
- Lobbies: sweep, mop, vacuum, dust public computers, clean tabletops, clean windows/doors.
- Restrooms:
- Daily: Clean toilets, sinks, mirrors and urinals. Sweep and mop. Empty trash. Change trash bags. Wipe off trash bins. Check supplies of toilet paper, paper towels, soap and hand sanitizers.
- At least every 6 months: Deep Cleaning
- Clean exterior doors and office doors, daily.
- Dust surfaces daily, including: office furniture, window ledges, shelves (without personal items), filing cabinets, vents, wood treatment.
- Clean light covers, as needed.
- Scrub and/or strip and wax floors, as needed.
- Spot shampoo or extract carpets, as needed. Note any carpet stains that cannot be immediately removed, and follow-up.
- Buff floors, completed on a floor rotation schedule.
- Cover facility requests, including (but not limited to):
- Event set-up (tables, chairs,
- Clean-up after completion of event
- As needed, communications with event requestor to assure event details are known and followed
- Maintain event list and information for designated area
- Report any building damage utilizing work request system.
- Assist in loading and unloading supplies and equipment delivered to the College. Deliver supplies and packages to appropriate departments/employees.
- Maintain nightly supply needs.
- Maintain interior walkways.
- Assist with de-icing and snow removal procedures for exterior walkways.
- Secure designated buildings and classrooms.
- Maintain all tools and equipment.
- Be alert to storm warnings and assist with the safety and evacuation procedures in all buildings when threatening weather conditions exist; know and be able to implement necessary procedures for evacuation of building/area in the case of fire.
- Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes (except in scenarios that require special equipment or ladders)
- Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees, vendors and/or any other representatives of external organization.
- Comply with all College policies and procedures.
- Must be willing to assist on weekend activities and clean Wellness Center and Dining Hall on a rotating schedule.
- Assist groundskeepers, when needed.
- Assist the Custodial Supervisor by performing other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of standard custodial cleaning procedures.
- Ability to maintain the required standard of cleanliness.
- Excellent work ethics.
- Ability to use or learn to use a computer.
- Valid drivers license.
- Ability to work under the constant pressure of deadlines.
- Must possess initiative to perform tasks with minimal direct supervision or irection.
- Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
- Good communications skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work. Work well under deadline pressures.
- Excellent human relations skills. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
- Understanding of and commitment to quality improvement.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time; be able to work for long periods of time while standing and walking; ability to move freely around campus and other location; mental capacity to make decisions and follow through with directions; ability to follow safety and security practices; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and grasp as required to perform responsibilities; ability to operate a motor vehicle; and ability to operate multiple types of custodian equipment (including, but not limited to: vacuum, vacuum back-pack, floor buffer, carpet cleaner).
