The Johnson & Johnson Communicable Disease Unit is committed to discover and develop novel antibiotics for tuberculosis and build on the legacy of bedaquiline, a groundbreaking drug developed by Janssen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from a single pathogen and the biggest contributor to AMR-related death worldwide. At Communicable Disease, we take a multi-disciplinary approach to develop new antimycobacterial and technologies that would help to achieve simpler, shorter and safer treatment regimens for MDR-TB patients.

We are looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic and innovative scientist, to join our dynamic Discovery-Translational team in Beerse, Belgium.

The Associate Scientist will mainly develop, conduct and manage in vitro assays/ in vivo models for M. tuberculosis to evaluate the efficacy of new anti-tuberculosis compounds, alone and in combination. They will also help to manage key interactions with external stakeholders. This is all done in a team-oriented, result driven, international research environment that provides an excellent career opportunity for a Scientist that takes initiative in driving the Communicable Disease strategy forward.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop, optimize, validate and perform novel in vitro assays for M. tuberculosis .

  • Perform and report on M. tuberculosis MIC, MBC and kill kinetic assays.

  • Conduct and report on in vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies.

  • Maintain bacterial and compound stocks, and the shipment of these to external stakeholders.

  • Act as operational lead and point of contact for the TB in vitro and in vivo facilities.

  • Establish a key understanding of the relevance of the data being generated.

  • Present own work to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Write up lab book to department and patent-acceptable standard.

  • Use appropriate scientific literature to plan assays.

  • Maintain awareness of the relevant scientific literature and contemporary laboratory practices.

Qualifications

The following are minimum requirements related to the Senior Associate Scientist position.

  • MSc in a relevant Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related; with at least 2 years of experience in industry setting or equivalent.

  • Experienced in different microbiology techniques, such us culture, stocks mainteinance, molecular techniques and compound efficacy assessment. Work experience with mycobacteria would be a plus.

  • Experience working in a Biosafety level 3 is preferred.

  • Lab experience working with mice and having the corresponding accreditation (FELASA B).

  • Proficient in English.

  • Proficient in MS Office and Graphpad Prism.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data and reporting the results.

  • Demonstration of robust oral and written communication skills. Shown ability to collaborate, empathize with team members of different backgrounds required.

  • Ability to work well in a quick paced, dynamic and interactive environment is vital. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work under pressure.
