Summary
The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC2) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Area Specialist Lead in the field of spectroscopic characterization. This is a full-time position responsible for providing technical and scientific support to faculty, researchers, and students in the MC2.
Responsibilities*
Lead the spectroscopy characterization research area, including oversight of daily operations, maintenance of equipment, and training of users
Provide consultation, training, and technical support to researchers on the use of XPS, and Raman for materials characterization, as well as initial training for introductory SEM users
Develop and implement new techniques and protocols to promote research in the field of materials science
Collaborate with faculty and researchers to design and execute experiments and analyze data
Communicate research findings through presentations and publications
Participate in the development of grant proposals and provide input on budgetary and resource needs
Up to 20% of your full-time effort can be on research projects in collaboration with UM faculty and/or industry / other external sponsors
Required Qualifications*
PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field with a strong focus on surface analytics
At least 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of Raman and XPS equipment and data analysis
Proficiency in image processing and analysis software
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with researchers and students from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with additional materials characterization techniques such as SEM, FIB, or TEM
Experience with grant proposal development and budget management
Experience in a leadership role
Work Locations
The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. You will be classified as an ON-SITE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus at least 4 days per week and working remotely the balance of your time.
