Summary

This Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) role is a newly created position to provide a nutrition resource for U-M Health patients with disordered eating/eating disorders. This RDN would be expected to care for patients with disordered eating/eating disorders including, but not limited to, diagnoses of: anorexia nervosa, bingeing, bingeing-purging, body dysmorphia, bulimia, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), orthorexia, excessive exercise, weight loss, short statue, and/or failure to thrive.

The RDN who fills this role would serve as a central disordered eating/eating disorder referral source for patients receiving care in our Adolescent Medicine clinic (children/adolescents/young adults). The RDN who fills this role will partner with our Adolescent Medicine team who cares for patients with eating disorders. An ability to perform care coordination with other disciplines such as physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, and other specialists will be an integral part of this position.

The RDN who fills this role will have their own provider schedule to see patients referred by the medical provider via prescheduled, frequent visits that may be in person, via video visit, and/or via telephone.

This person may work in a virtual and/or onsite capacity.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Supervision received from Manager of Ambulatory Care Nutrition Services.

  • Liaison relationship with interdisciplinary health care team for patient care populations of responsibility.

  • Peer relationships with RDNs in work group.

  • RDN may be invited to precept dietetic interns.

Responsibilities*

Patient Care

  • Conduct an ongoing comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients identified at nutritional risk and/or for patients identified to be seen as per ambulatory clinic standards.

  • Incorporate evidence-based standards when interpreting patient related data.

  • Organize patient health and disease information in order to identify nutrition-related problems.

  • Evaluate need for specialized nutrition support and make appropriate recommendations accordingly.

  • Develop and implement an individualized plan for nutrition intervention.

  • Perform nutrition diagnosis after identifying the problem and clarifying the cause of the problem.

  • Ground interventions through review of quality research and/or use of medical nutrition therapy evidenced-based practice.

  • Chart nutritional diagnosis, individualized nutrition treatment plan, follow-up documentation of patient outcomes and revisions to plan in the electronic medical record. This communication is performed in a timely manner that is consistent with unit policy and procedures.

  • Recognize the varied needs of age-specific populations, as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns.

  • Reassess the nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated.

  • Obtain prior authorizations for nutritional supplements and support regimens, and other items related to a patient?s nutritional care, as needed.

  • Communicate regularly with the medical team through interdisciplinary ambulatory care clinic coverage.

  • Abide by U-M Health policy for the proper use of patients? protected health information.

  • Abide by U-M Health policy for the proper use of infection prevention precautions in patient care areas.

Business Functions

  • Provide service for identified patient populations, including telephone support. Has routine communication with patients as needed for frequent nutrition related questions.

  • Utilize charge capture by RDN for RDN services.

  • Provide quality service based on customer expectations and needs.

  • Incorporate U-M Health core values of respect, compassion, trust, integrity, efficiency and leadership into all work efforts.

  • Maintain productivity standards and practice effective time management.

  • Assist in achieving compliance with state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects as appropriate.

  • Contribute to quality improvement efforts.

  • Collect outcome data to help improve practice as requested.

Required Qualifications*

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to work with a team to accomplish organizational goals.

  • Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing.

  • Implement critical thinking to solve problems.

  • Use technology such as word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION

  • Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Requires primary source verification. Candidate may also be RDN eligible as long as RDN status is achieved within 6 months of hire.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Employees in this classification are required to have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.

NOTE:

  • Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.

Desired Qualifications*

Preferred Certification:

  • Board Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) or Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition (CSP)

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in Nutrition related field.

  • Documented experience working with disordered eating/eating disorder patient population.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
