Job Summary

ThisManager position will participate and lead in the direction, supervision, and provision of daily pharmacy operations in the Central Pharmacy in University Hospital over order verification, medication preparation and distribution across morning, afternoon, and midnights shifts. They will work in collaboration with other pharmacy leadership in the Central Pharmacy area.

Ensures that all services are performed in accordance with hospital, departmental, and governmental policies, procedures, and regulations. Ensures all related quality assurance and distribution activities are performed and documented. Manages functional area(s) as designated. Assists with the creation, development, and implementation of new programs. Performs clinical pharmacist duties and responsibilities on an intermittent and as needed frequency.

Responsibilities*

  • Work collaboratively with physician and leadership teams to develop and implement quality improvement and process improvements to improve patient care and pharmacy services.

  • Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, terminate, or promote assigned employees.

  • Direct management may include pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy supervisors, and/or pharmacy interns and students.

  • This position has impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change.

  • Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.

  • Provide personnel supervision over assigned staff. Coordinate the selection, direction, training and discipline of technicians and pharmacists that report directly to you including area specific coordinators and other assigned staff.

  • Provide direct oversight and management for USP compliance in properly maintaining staff competency, education and training, and monitoring surveillance activities.

  • Oversee and manage drug and product recalls, REMS drugs, shortages, outages, and instances where therapeutic substitution is necessary including providing direction to the inventory group as needed to carry out the required processes.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and regulatory requirements for the procurement, storage, and distribution of pharmaceutical inventory.

  • Contribute to the education, training and professional development of University of Michigan College of Pharmacy students and interns through support of on-site clinical experiences and internships.

  • Lead the initiative to validate, review, and document the competence of assigned technical staff providing pharmacy services.

  • Contribute to the education, training, professional development, and assessment of subordinate staff. Coordinate and validate that all subordinate staff are oriented and competent.

  • Direct the development of individual performance plans for the pharmacy staff, review of staff performance, and addressing personnel issues.

  • Lead the initiative for staff development through the provision of continuing education endeavors and staff training for new functions.

  • May conduct or participate in research, drug use projects, cost reduction/management initiatives, and quality improvement activities consistent with Michigan Medicine?s goals and objectives.

  • Contribute to the maintenance of TJC and other regulatory required programs and documentation including preparation for accreditation surveys.

Other Related Duties:

  • Complies with all University of Michigan and departmental standards and expectations.

  • Supports the department?s commitment to continuous improvement activities and principles through positive and respectful contribution in all problem-solving and change processes within the Infusion Pharmacy Department.

  • Participates in department committees and work teams as assigned.

  • Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development and maintains and upgrades professional knowledge and practice skills through attendance and participation in continuing education and in-service classes.

  • Ability to meet all of the above qualifications and requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Licensure in good standing, or immediate eligibility for Licensure, as a Registered Pharmacist with an active controlled substance license in the State of Michigan.

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree or Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy with one-year residency or fellowship or equivalent clinical experience.

  • 3 to 5+ years hospital pharmacy experience

  • General office work physical demands.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 1 to 2+ years pharmacy experience in a supervisory position

  • Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency training

  • Masters degree

  • Proficient in operating within the Windows environment with experience in use of the following software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.

Work Schedule

The expectation of this role would be mainly Monday ? Friday day shift, but the leader would be expected to be flexible on afternoons, midnights, and weekends as needed by their team and projects. This position would be included in Pharmacy Administrator on-call program.

Work Locations

This position will oversee team members on University of Michigan Health?s main hospital campus in Ann Arbor, MI in the Adult Hospitals.

Additional Information

Must comply with all Michigan Medicine Occupational Health requirements including annual flu immunization.
