Summary

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director and Associate Chief Nursing Officer-Ambulatory Care in the planning and management of the patient care services for the Pre and Post Anesthesia Care areas. Provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice and supportive staff roles. To participate as a member of an Ambulatory Care Unit's leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the Health System. To ensure the quality of nursing services provided to patients. The ideal candidate will be firm yet personable, a strong leader with the ability to set high standards and hold people accountable for meeting unit performance and patient care standards. They will have process improvement background and demonstrated ability as a change agent. Prior experience in Post Anesthesia Care Units and/or ambulatory surgery is preferred.

Responsibilities*

Personal Management:

  • Select, hire, and plan for staffing, consistent with service needs and budget.

  • Schedule and assign clinical and ancillary staff, arrange, and provide daily staffing coverage as needed.

  • Supervise, mentor, counsel and evaluate staff as part of a continuous development program within the Professional Framework

  • Develop and maintain organizational systems to ensure compliance of staff mandatories including license, and required certifications.

  • Manage payroll, financial responsibility, supplies and the patient care environment.

  • Support staff education, cross training, and proficiency growth & development

  • Develop and foster teamwork and building trusting relationships.

  • Facilitate open channels of communication with CND, ACNO/ACOO, peers, staff, and physicians.

  • Manage the orientation and competency evaluation of staff.

  • Counsel and discipline staff to enable achievement of the unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high quality patient care.

  • Supervisor and partner with Educational Nurse Coordinator to develop and implement new rollouts in respective areas.

Clinical Practice:

  • Participate in coordination of unit operations including instrument processing, equipment evaluation, specialty items, and specific surgeon requests.

  • Collaborate with OR leaders and anesthesia regarding patient placement and flow.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.

  • Develop and implement Daily Management Systems

  • Support BASE strategies and priorities.

  • Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign and cost-management strategies in the planning and management of clinical operations.

  • Provides input into nursing payroll budget, and monitors and problem solve with administrators, medical directors, and health center manager regarding variances.

  • Organizes and facilitates unit based educational activities and in-services.

  • Assures compliance with regulatory programs' standards related to the nursing. Provides leadership, assists, and advises administrators, medical directors, and health center managers in satisfying other regulatory standards.

  • Interprets and implements University and Health System policies and procedures.

  • Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.

  • Provides interface and liaison communications regarding programs external to the unit which have implications for nursing staff.

  • Represents nursing, ambulatory care services and/or the clinical department(s) or unit(s) on assigned committees.

  • Responds to clinical risk concerns, patient complaints and quality improvement opportunities

Quality Assurance and Research:

  • Participates in and conducts the analysis of data.

  • Assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit.

  • Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement activities.

  • Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work.

  • Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice.

  • Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated.

  • Supports staff engagement and participates in unit based councils

Professional Development Education:

  • Facilitate collective activity in professional organizations.

  • Contribute professional clinical and management expertise to other health professionals, both formally and informally.

  • Participate in professional organizations.

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements:

Applicant must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR

  • Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.

  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience.

  • Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in PACU.

  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.), for the list visithere (https://www.nursingworld.org/organizational-programs/magnet/program-tools/accepted-certifications/) .

  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.

  • Current ACLS and PALS

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in Nursing preferred.

  • Supervisory experience

  • CAPA/CPAN certifications (must obtain within 1 year of hire)

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours/week with 24/7 responsibility

Shift: Day/Evening shifts, including Saturdays - hours will flex to department need.

Location: Ambulatory Care, Kellogg Eye Surgery Center.
