Job Summary

The English Department Writing Program (EDWP) at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor seeks applicants for a full time new Lecturer III position with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2025. This is a non-tenure track position, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs September 1 through May 31 each year). Specifically, the EDWP seeks a writing pedagogy specialist with expertise in creative writing pedagogy and instructor professional development to serve as the Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will join the EDWP's collaborative leadership team to help direct a large instructional staff of graduate student instructors and lecturer faculty. This faculty member will oversee and provide direction for composition and creative writing courses in the program in collaboration with the MFA program and EDWP leadership, and they will develop and oversee an ongoing education/professional development program for returning graduate student instructors and lecturer faculty.

A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties.

The initial appointment period will be one (1) to four (4) years (depending on qualifications), and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.

We are particularly interested in candidates with terminal degrees in creative writing and/ or writing studies or a related field, expertise in writing pedagogy and creative writing pedagogy, experience in pedagogy training and mentoring, and knowledge of best practices in DEIJ-informed pedagogy.

The Assistant Director will collaborate with the leadership team to help the EDWP community reach its goals of excellence in undergraduate education, graduate pedagogy training, and lecturer faculty teaching.

Responsibilities*

  • Design and oversee professional development for returning graduate student instructors

  • Collaborate with other EDWP directors to develop teaching-focused program evaluation and professional development opportunities for the entire EDWP community

  • Provide pedagogy instruction for MFA students, as they teach first-year writing, prepare to teach introductory creative writing, and teach introductory creative writing

  • Support the professional development of MFA students by conducting teaching observations, writing letters of recommendation, and providing guidance in further development of their teaching

  • Participate in hiring and review of EDWP lecturer faculty

  • Teach composition and creative writing courses in the department

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD in Writing Studies, English Language and Literature, Creative Writing or a related field; or an MFA in Creative Writing

  • Evidence of excellence in university writing instruction, including at least four years of experience as instructor of record for university-level creative writing and composition courses

  • Evidence of outstanding communication and collaboration skills

  • Evidence of knowledge and practice in DEIJ-informed pedagogy

  • Evidence of mentoring, administration, and/ or participation in writing program professional development

Desired Qualifications*

  • More than four years of experience teaching first-year writing or creative writing at a university

  • Experience serving in an administrative/leadership role in an undergraduate or graduate academic program

  • Experience developing instructional training and/or faculty development

  • Experience and/or interest in collaborative program research

  • Research and/or writing on teaching shared in professional communities or publications

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
