Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Public Services, the Head of Emerging Legal Technology will focus on integrating a wide range of technologies, including generative AI, into research instruction and learning spaces, promoting adoption of electronic resources across the law school, and developing the Law Library's legal technology educational offerings. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Assistant Director for Collections and Access Services to develop and manage the Law Library's electronic resources collection. The ideal candidate will have experience in a large law firm setting or similar practical experience that will allow them to manage electronic resources, especially those common in legal practice, and provide experiential learning opportunities for the law school community.

Responsibilities*

  • Oversees the integration of legal technology, including generative AI, and library resources into research instruction and learning spaces

  • Develops and delivers legal technology and experiential trainings that support emerging technology competency among law school patron groups

  • Oversees outreach efforts to generate and expand user awareness of electronic resources in the Law Library's collection

  • Coordinates Legal Tech Series programs and promotes the Law Library's Legal Tech Studio

  • Monitors changes in legal e-resources and legal technology offerings, testing and recommending products for integration into the library collection and tech curriculum

  • Oversees the review and management of e-resource licenses

  • Participates in the implementation of University accessibility standards for Law Library e-resources

  • Participates in reference duties, including evenings and weekends at the information desk on a rotating basis

  • Assists with ensuring coverage of faculty research services and public service points

  • May supervise work of Reference and Student Outreach Librarian

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree from an A.L.A. accredited school of information or library science

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school (Extensive experience in a practical legal setting may be considered in lieu of a J.D.)

  • At least 3 years of experience working in a law library

  • At least 2 years of experience working in a law firm setting

  • Successful supervisory experience

  • Knowledge of current practical legal technology competencies at large law firms, courts, and government agencies

  • Strong problem-solving and leadership skills

  • Proven ability to work effectively with other decision-makers

  • Substantial knowledge of and proficiency with a wide range of legal information sources and research methods

  • A strong service orientation

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Licensed to practice law in one or more U.S. states (active or inactive)

  • Practical legal experience

Underfill Statement

This position may be filled at the Senior Associate Librarian classification or underfilled at the Associate Librarian classification, depending upon qualifications and experience. A candidate who meets the qualifications and is hired to supervise the Reference and Student Outreach Librarian will be exempt from the LEO-GLAM bargaining unit.

Additional Information

This is a regular, full-time (12 Month), 100% appointment and is subject to the collective bargaining agreement between the Regents of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Lecturer's Employee Organization, AFT Local 6244, AFL-CIO, Librarians, Archivists, and Curators Bargaining Unit.

Salary: minimum $66,000 at the Associate Librarian level and minimum $69,000 at the Senior Associate level, commensurate with experience and qualifications; benefits worth 28% of salary. Additional support is available for professional development activities.
