Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Powertrain Design (PDE) team is looking for a passionate, highly-motivated Evaluation Engineer with an interest in conventional (ICE and A/T), hybrid and electrified powertrain (PT) systems.

The primary responsibilities of this role are to plan and conduct powertrain functional and durability testing in collaboration with technician and design teams:

  • Planning and executing evaluation of SOP, VA, accessories, and quality improvement projects through the application of Toyota processes and tools.

  • Test planning, test preparation, daily test management and post-test activity.

  • Resolving evaluation issues by collaborating with stakeholders (cross departments, suppliers, NAMCs and TMC) to identify root cause and gaining consensus on future direction.

  • Interpretation of test results and providing clear final judgement versus test criteria of the evaluation.

Reporting to a Manager in Powertrain Design and Evaluation, the person in this role will support the PDE department's objective to build “World Class Powertrains in North America”

What you’ll be doing

  • Using your knowledge of the Toyota processes, work closely with evaluation engineers and technicians to plan and complete:

  • PT evaluations on time and to cost by leading:

  • Test planning

  • Test preparation

  • Daily test management

  • Post-test activity

  • Deliverables such as technical reports and presentations, including conclusions and recommendations to the design team from the evaluations.

  • Proposing solutions to technical and procedural challenges that are incurred during evaluation activities or design change points.

  • Building relationships with key stakeholders (TMNA PT design and test, Calibration, vehicle development, NAMC evaluation teams, and TMC PT design and development) to create “One Team” and collaborate to gain consensus to resolve challenges encountered.

  • Benchmarking other OEM PT designs to ensure our competitiveness (i.e. cost and customer expectations). Propose and implement a benchmarking process.

  • Training in the Toyota Way

  • Travel 10%

  • Overtime 20%

What you bring

  • Bachelor of Science (or above) with a Mech Engineering major.

  • Experience in Powertrain functional and durability testing.

  • Strong knowledge and experience of PT instrumentation and measurement techniques.

  • Strong knowledge of conventional powertrains.

  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Excellent verbal and electronic communication skills, and experience working in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Team-oriented thinking and a “can-do” attitude.

  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.

  • This position requires driving. A motor vehicle record that’s acceptable by company standards is required for this position.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master’s Degree in engineering.

  • Experience in engine functional and durability testing.

  • Strong knowledge of hybrid and electrified powertrains.

  • Proven track record of delivering successful PT evaluation projects.

  • Proven track record of improving existing PT evaluation processes and developing new processes and capabilities.
