Who We Are

Utilities is a division of Facilities and Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

Responsibilities*

  • Start up and shut down boilers, monitor boiler operations and react to varying load requirements.

  • Inspect and adjust automatic and manual boiler control mechanisms.

  • Clean, inspect and perform routine maintenance on equipment and facilities including but not limited to, oiling, greasing, repair of furnace refractories and repacking of leaking packing glands, inspecting, adjusting and replacing belts and rebuilding bottom blow valves.

  • Test and maintain chemical balance in boiler water according to prescribed procedures.

  • Conduct complex preventative and corrective maintenance and inspections of boiler systems.

  • Perform brazing and soldering.

  • Install and replace stainless steel and copper tubing, valves and component parts in equipment and electronic boiler control systems.

  • Fabricate and install parts by machining or cutting metal and bending steel pipe and sheet metal for duct work and stacks.

  • Repair or replace electrical motors, pumps, air compressors, heat exchangers, valves, bearings and pulleys on boiler related systems.

  • Install furnaces.

  • Calibrate and adjust natural gas pressure regulators.

  • Trim boiler combustion using flue gas analyzers on non-parallel positioning combustion control boilers.

  • Utilize mechanical and electrical blueprints for trouble shooting.

  • Layout and build boiler small bore pipe and tubing systems.

  • Rebuild, setup and calculate capacity of water softeners.

  • Observe University fire and safety procedures such as burn permits, personal protective equipment use, lockout and confined space procedures.

  • May coordinate the work, and instruct Boiler Operator Trainees.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or a trade school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Reasonable progressively responsible experience in boiler maintenance.

  • Considerable maritime or power house experience with high pressure boiler operations.

  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding and practical experience of the technologies associated with operating conventional and modern boiler controls.

  • Thorough knowledge of the equipment, methods and material used in boiler operations, water treatment, and combustion controls.

  • Considerable working knowledge and basic trouble shooting skills for all water treatment equipment such as reverse osmosis, water softeners, de-aerating feed tanks, etc.

  • Thorough knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of high and low pressure boilers and related equipment.

  • Advanced knowledge of boiler codes and their application.

  • Ability to tolerate high levels of heat and noise.

  • Considerable mechanical aptitude.

  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in boiler operations.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of high pressure boiler and related equipment.

  • Ability to regulate boiler operations.

  • Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise. This includes, but is not limited to, operating valves, inspecting equipment, traversing under and over obstacles, ascending/descending ladders, and being able to transport up to 50lbs.

  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position that will work on either an afternoon or midnight shift. This schedule has the potential to work an 8-hour rotating shift if the need arises.
