Summary

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a joint academic department with reporting lines to the College of Engineering and the Medical School. The dual-school environment includes a growing faculty roster within both schools, a large and increasing collaborative research portfolio, multi-building research facilities, innovative instructional programs at all academic levels, and a focus on research translation and entrepreneurship. BME is pursuing strategic goals to establish enhanced connections within and beyond both schools. By launching shared facility cores to enable faculty success in research and providing an educational experience for undergraduate students through Ph.D. candidates, BME strives to best prepare graduates for the multitude of career options at the interface of engineering, life sciences, and medicine.

Candidates for the role of Desktop Support Specialist will provide desktop and general IT support to faculty, staff, and students engaged in a variety of academic and research initiatives.

Responsibilities*

  • Under general supervision and direction of senior technical staff, administers server platforms, provides computer desktop support, mobile device support, and services to the department, which includes installing/configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining mobile/desktop/laptop/workstation/server software and hardware, network support, printer support, email support, and working with support staff/vendors to get quotes/order/RMA/replace equipment or software.

  • Routinely moves equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Provides computer/general application support for Macintosh/Windows/Linux operating systems, escalating more complex problems to senior technical staff.

  • Works with senior technical staff to track and mitigate security vulnerabilities.

  • Keeps abreast of current technologies. Tests hardware, software, and operating systems. Implements new technologies as directed by senior staff.

  • Documents assigned systems and relevant procedures.

  • Performs routine classroom/conference room/event support.

  • Administers user and group accounts.

  • Familiar with Office products, Google Suite, Dropbox, and Zoom.

  • Other general support as needed.

Required Qualifications*

  • Associate degree or equivalent (computer related certifications) and 2 to 3 years computer experience.

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in customer service and/or help desk environment.

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively or in a team.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail, professional demeanor, and ability to incorporate feedback.

  • Routinely moves equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Must qualify as a "U.S. Person" as defined by U. S. government regulations for export control data requirements for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strong desire for continuous learning.

  • This is an empowered position. You will be required to make educated decisions when senior technical staff are not available. In addition, it's expected that you will raise issues to senior technical staff when you see opportunities for process improvements.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited University preferred.

  • Prior hands-on experience installing and supporting hardware, software, and networked systems in a multi-platform environment.

  • Proven ability to interact with all levels of computer users.

  • Datacenter operations experience.

  • Matlab experience.

  • Any programming/scripting experience.

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Biomedical Engineering operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. Additional Information

  • This position also provides IT support for the fMRI Laboratory while also under the direction of BME's senior technical staff.

  • BME & fMRI have users in 14 buildings spread across North Campus, NCRC, Michigan Medical Campus, and Domino's Farms. You should be comfortable providing your own transportation OR using the provided UM shuttles.
