POSITION SUMMARY:

The mission of the Area Engineer is to provide technical expertise and project management services to the Area Team and Engineering Department. The following are general roles & responsibilities that the Area Engineer will typically complete while fulfilling this mission. Additional assignments and responsibilities may be required depending on an individual Area Engineers knowledge, experience, and workload.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Area / Project Team Support

  • Review project list with the Area Team on a regular basis to help prioritize the project list.

  • Complete scope, design, and constructability reviews with the Area Team for all projects to make sure the project meets the Teams needs including hourly personnel in both Maintenance and Operations.

  • Assist Area Maintenance and Procurement in specifying piping, valves, and engineered equipment.

  • Manage MOC’s for assigned projects

  • Provide engineering and design support for unit shutdowns and turnarounds.

  • Attend Area Team meetings. Be an active participant, champion MPMP and POTP

  • Develop routine maintenance repair packages for piping and fixed equipment

    HES&S / PSM / PSI

  • Complete all required training on time.

  • Participate in unit and project PHA’s (What-if’s and HAZOP’s)

  • Complete / participate in incident investigations

  • Complete PSM recommendations on time.

  • Review all projects with Safety during the feasibility and design phases to:

  • Ensure projects comply with safety standards and codes

  • Identify potential ergonomic issues.

  • Ensure engineering controls are fully utilized.

  • Ensure Environmental checklists are completed for all projects through Environmental Department

  • Ensure Management of Change (MOC) process is followed for all projects.

  • Participate in emergency response Planning Section as necessary.

  • Complete incident investigations / root cause analyses as assigned.

    Design / Reliability

  • Understand and apply engineering codes and specs to ensure project designs meet applicable standards (RAGAGEP).

  • Review equipment designs with Reliability to identify potential problems or areas for improvement.

  • Review designs with Tech Services to ensure process requirements are met.

  • Work with Reliability to develop engineered solutions for equipment with reliability issues.

  • Complete peer reviews for QA/QC on process and mechanical design for in-house projects as required (i.e., verify process conditions comply with ANSI/ASME applicable codes and Marathon Refining Standard Specifications, hydraulics, PSV pressure drops etc.).

    Project Management / Controls

  • Manage Plan of the Plan (POTP).

  • Maintain a prioritized list of jobs that includes capital budget projects, HES&S projects, and Area Team priorities.

  • Prepare Decision Support Packages (DSP) and present for approval.

  • Coordinate project work with outside engineering firms.

  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.

  • Ensure projects are properly documented and all process safety information (PSI) and mechanical integrity information is updated.

  • Monitor and control the cost and schedule in all phases of projects.

  • Control scope creep on approved projects.

  • Coordinate procurement of engineered material for all projects.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.

  • Minimum of 3 years post degree engineering experience in the refining or petrochemical industry is preferred.

  • Mechanical engineering detailed engineering design background is preferred.

    This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
