Job Summary

Provides a wide variety of services to the Alterations Department including, but not limited to, demolition and abatement of hazardous materials; installation and maintenance of finishes; and repairs to structural and architectural building components. Responsibilities include the renovation, maintenance, and repair of University buildings and spaces and applying appropriate skills and methods as necessary in the areas of carpentry, glass replacement/repair, and painting.

Essential Functions

  • Renovates and remodels buildings and structures utilizing skills, methods, and tools of the trades to construct, alter, repair, and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, hardware, shelving, furniture, and all other associated construction related items.

  • Prepares surfaces and applies products to industry standards, such as paint, stain, varnish and/or wall coverings to surfaces by means of brush, roller, sprayer, or other appropriate equipment to finish or refinish surfaces.

  • Installs, repairs, and finishes glass, windows, mirrors, mesh glass, glass doors, or structural glass in campus buildings.

  • Interprets and/or sketches layouts of work to estimate length of time and quantities of material and labor needed to complete jobs.

  • Erects ladders and scaffolding as needed to perform assigned work. May be required to work out of a bucket truck.

  • Prepares surfaces and installs flooring products such as tile, sheet goods, and modular carpet.

  • Performs minor plumbing related work not requiring a license.

  • Performs minor electrical work not requiring a license.

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • May have to instruct, functionally supervise, and direct others in their work.

  • Based on assignment, additional training as required by this department.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience, and demonstrated competence in the carpentry, glass and painting trades.

  • Valid Class D driver's license.

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, work methods, and practice of one or more of the following construction and repair trades: carpentry, painting, and glazing.

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of materials, tools, and equipment associated with one or more of the specified construction and repair trades.

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of safety equipment such as protective clothing, respirator protection, ladders, scaffolds, rigging, etc.

  • General knowledge of plumbing and electrical principles and techniques.

  • Skill in the operation and use of both electric and non-electric hand tools.

  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity, physical stamina, and endurance.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, blueprints and drawings.

  • The willingness to work as a multi-trade employee in a high-performance team and ability to work independently.

  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and to work as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Based on assignment, a valid Class B license or a valid CDL license with appropriate endorsements

  • Based on assignment, a valid construction supervisor's license or the ability to obtain one may be required

Physical Demands/ Working Conditions

  • Ability to balance, carry, push/pull, stand, bend, climb, drive, reach, sit, twist lift and perform repetitive movement.

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces as well as in hot and humid environments.

  • May be exposed to high noise areas and noxious fumes, requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

  • May be exposed to the hazards of sharp tools and running equipment.

Additional Details

  • Incumbents of positions in this series receive direct supervision from managers or classified employees of higher grade who provide on-the-job training, assign work, and review performance through verbal reports and inspection for effectiveness.

  • May exercise functional supervision over one to five trades personnel or seasonal employees as assigned.

    Work Schedule

M-F; 6am - 2pm.

Salary Information

AFSCME Non-Exempt Grade 14.
