Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Architecture, in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Design Technology. Exceptional candidates with commensurate experience and proven track record will be considered for tenure and advanced rank of Associate Professor.

The department seeks qualified candidates for the start date of Fall 2024 who demonstrate excellence in integrated building technologies. Candidates must have a record of research in building technologies and/or sustained creative activity in the areas of new materials, processes of fabrication and assembly, computational design, building structures, or parametric performance. C andidates must be prepared to teach in our award-winning undergraduate and graduate sequence of integrated building technology which combines materials/assemblies, structural design, and environmental forces and systems ; conduct research/creative activity in their area of focus; and provide service to the school and to the profession. A successful candidate will be expected to shape the evolution of our integrated building technology sequence and its relationship with our broader architecture curriculum. They also must develop an effective computational design pedagogy that translates principles of building technology into design representations, models, and simulations.

Successful candidates will be expected to establish, sustain, and grow a world-class externally funded research/creative activity program that complements or aligns with the department’s areas through independent and collaborative efforts. Additionally, the candidate is expected to establish a record of scholarship at the highest levels, contribute to the teaching missions at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in institutional service and service to the profession. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • MArch, or BArch + Graduate degree in Architecture or closely related field.

  • Associate Professor candidates must also meet the university standards for appointment to the rank, including significant experience/accomplishments in the candidate’s area of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in scholarly design technology teaching.

  • A record of research in building technologies and/or creative activity in the areas of new materials, processes of fabrication and assembly, computational design, building structures, or parametric performance.

  • Recognition in teaching, research and/or creative activity in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence and machine learning, environmental performance, structural optimization, and/or new materials technologies.

  • Evidence of incorporating a scholarly approach to the socio-cultural, ethical, and economic aspects of computational design, performance simulation, and digital fabrication.

  • PhD in building technology, computational design, or a closely related field

The Iowa State University College of Design is a comprehensive design college. The Department of Architecture, with accredited programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, has a long history of excellence and is consistently ranked one of the top programs in the country. The College of Design brings together prestigious programs in architecture, studio arts, industrial design, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, and community & regional planning. The collaborative opportunities that emerge from the close interaction of these disciplines are one of the college's greatest advantages. The College of Design is home to approximately 1,930 (360 architecture) undergraduate and 180 (60 architecture) graduate students.
