Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Mechanic Intern (High School) in Allentown, Pennsylvania

Reference #: 4547423 THE POSITION The Department of Transportation in Lehigh County is currently looking to hire a Mechanic Intern for a paid internship opportunity. This position involves carrying out a range of tasks including analytical work, preventative maintenance, and repairs on a fleet of construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles. The vehicles are powered by either gasoline or diesel engines. The mechanic intern will be responsible for working on hydraulic, electric, heating, cooling, exhaust systems, as well as manual and automatic transmissions. Additionally, you will conduct state vehicle inspections on all assigned equipment, complete necessary work orders, accurately record time spent on tasks, and promptly report any accidents or damages to the equipment.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK As an Intern, you will play a crucial role in the repair and overhaul of various vehicles, including cars, trucks, and tractors. Additionally, you will be responsible for conducting maintenance and repairs on equipment such as sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders. This entails repairing and replacing essential components like shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, and other parts. Moreover, you will be skilled in balancing wheels and ensuring proper alignment, as well as performing minor body repairs. Furthermore, you will have the expertise to overhaul and test alternators and electrical components on both vehicles and equipment.

In addition to their repair and maintenance duties, you will actively contribute to a preventative maintenance program for vehicles, equipment, and parts. You will assist in conducting automotive mechanical diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes. Furthermore, you will be proficient in repairing and replacing engine sub-assemblies, as well as adjusting and repairing various components such as cooling systems, suspension systems, electrical systems, heating systems, and air-conditioning systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining fuel, brake, steering, and transmission systems. You will also possess the skills to repair or rebuild construction or shop equipment.

This position will also play a vital role in identifying equipment issues by utilizing diagnostic equipment and procedures. This will involve determining problems, repair methods, procedures, tools, and parts required for effective repairs. Furthermore, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of motorized hand equipment, including chain saws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers, trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles. You will diligently report any missing parts or broken equipment as necessary, ensuring a smooth and efficient repair process.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Summer schedule will be 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. School term schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location. You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2024 - 2025 school year.

Additional Requirements: You must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved cooperative vocational program that has prepared the student for the duties and description of work described in this posting.

Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity. Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position. By participating in this program, the tudent and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation.
