The Role

This position is for a Manager Engineering 2 to lead a Project Engineering group within the Undersea Warfare (USW) department. The USW department is part of the Future Submarines Division at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) and is responsible for design and development of concepts to integrate advanced systems, vehicles, and payloads with submarines and other platforms. The USW department manages and provides support across multiple contracts ranging from R&D demonstration programs to new vehicle / submarine design efforts.

This position is located in the Kingstowne area of Alexandria, VA and is physically sited in a HII – Mission Technologies facility. It is one of three NNS locations in the National Capital Region.

Specifically, this position will provide technical oversight and supervision of all personnel located in the NNS Alexandria Engineering Office. The office currently supports multiple contracts related to future submarine development with specific efforts such as development of concepts for payload stowage and handling, execution of a model-based systems engineering pilot, design of a new test facility, and support for various R&D efforts evaluating new technologies. This position will provide guidance to task leads regarding project management and engineering activities as well as be responsible for ensuring the team is well coordinated with other sites and the larger department and division priorities. The candidate must be familiar with submarines and undersea systems with experience in leading design and engineering activities.

In addition, this position will be responsible for interfacing with the HII Mission Technologies management on issues related to co-use of the facility.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Travel for this position will consist of trips to the Washington Technical Office in Washington, DC and to Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA. Travel to other NNS or customer sites may be occasionally required.
