Title: Senior Research Support Specialist

Salary Range: $54,600 annual 37.5 hours/week, full time, excellent benefits

Position Summary:

The New York State Department Environmental Conservation's Division of Water (DOW) collects chemical, physical, and biological data to evaluate ambient water quality in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs of New York State. The DOW is required to submit water quality monitoring data to the WQX data warehouse as part of its federal Performance Partnership Grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Data in WQX are publicly available through the Water Quality Portal and How's My Waterway. The DOW is interested in leveraging Water Quality Exchange (WQX), Water Quality Portal, and How's My Waterway to improve data accessibility, which collectively store, share, visualize, and aid in the interpretation of water quality data.

Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities

The primary role of the Senior Research Support Specialist will be supporting the DOW monitoring programs to make monitoring data readily accessible to the public and NYSDEC internal programs. The Research Support Specialist will work under direct supervision of Project Manager in DOW but will be expected to operate with considerable independence to meet project objectives.

Under the technical and administrative supervision of the project manager at DOW and the principal investigator at SUNY ESF, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop a process to submit DOW's monitoring data to WQX.

  • Develop materials to instruct NYSDEC staff and external partners on how to use and download data from How's my Waterway and the Water Quality Portal.

  • Develop materials to explain to NYSDEC's external partners how to upload data to WQX.

  • Aid in the development of an tools for downloading data from the Water Quality Portal.

  • Lead project status meetings every 2-weeks with project manager and principal investigator.

  • Aid contractor staff with the development of an EPA Node for submitting DOW monitoring data to WQX.

  • Participate in monitoring program activities to gain an understanding of how the monitoring data are collected and provide some additional understanding of what the monitoring data represents.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications: Candidates for this position must have a bachelor's degree in data or computer science, informatics, database administration, bioinformatics, biology, ecology, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting chemical, physical, and biological environmental data.

  • Experience using SQL, python, or R.

  • Experience creating extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipelines

  • Knowledge of environmental contaminants and their behavior in the environment.

  • Experience developing standard operating procedures.

  • Experience with database management.

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; comfortable with public speaking.
