Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications Under the NY HELPS Program: This position includes an opportunity to serve in a traineeship and applicants will be appointed to the appropriate level based on their education and/or experience. Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill a Mental Health Program Specialist 1, G-18/Mental Health Program Specialist Trainee, NS, position in the Division of Forensic Services (DFS), Diversion Center. The Diversion Center’s mission is to support jurisdictions in the development, implementation, evaluation and replication of initiatives to the reduce arrest and incarceration of persons with serious mental illness (SMI). The general services provided by the Diversion Center are the assessment of local resources, current practices, and gaps in services through sequential intercept mapping; researching, training and technical assistance for the identification and diversion of justice-involved mentally ill individuals from incarceration; and researching, training and technical assistance to develop and sustain Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) programs in communities throughout NYS. Recent investments have been made to expand Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT), which have been shown to result in better outcomes when law enforcement respond to individuals in mental health crisis. Specifically, CIT has been shown to reduce arrest and increase connections to mental health services. The incumbent will assist with CIT training statewide and provide law enforcement with additional support, technical assistance, and resources. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to, the following:Assist in developing and revising training curriculum to support CIT expansion.Assist in the modification of existing CIT training and programs based on an assessment of needs.Monitor and evaluate CIT efforts through survey data to analyze and report on strengths and/or areas of potential improvement.Coordinate and schedule CIT trainings; manage and oversee training logistics, including applying for continuing education credits, securing training space, assisting with budgets and financial paperwork, and working with vendors. Participate in training programs and assist in other forensic mental health training curriculum development.Assist in the creation and implementation of enhanced scenario-based training for officers.

Candidates appointed at a trainee level will be required to successfully complete the traineeship to advance to the full performance level title and salary: $49,363 (Mental Health Program Specialist Trainee 1)$52,198 (Mental Health Program Specialist Trainee 2)$65,001 (Mental Health Program Specialist 1, full performance level)For current New York State employees, the starting salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.The Division of Forensic Services is conveniently located in independent offices on the grounds of the Capital District PC at 75 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, New York. Guaranteed covered parking is available for $5 per month.Specific scheduled hours and telecommuting availability for this position will be discussed during the interview process.
