Ford Motor Company Human Thermal Comfort Technical Expert in Albany, New York

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

Delivering world-class customer experience is a key priority at Ford. The importance of meeting attribute performance and delivering energy efficiency has never been more important; especially with battery electric and hybrid vehicles. The climate system, while providing a thermally comfortable environment to all passengers, is also a significant consumer of the battery energy. Ford’s pursuit of engineering energy-efficient battery electric and hybrid vehicles necessitates the design and development of new and innovative human thermal comfort strategies. The development and implementation will include new thermal comfort features (radiating panels, neck warmers, climate microzones, and cabin thermal sensing), new climate system HMI solutions, and control system strategies to provide both a seamless customer experience and maximize energy efficiency.

To enable the engineering of human-comfort-centric vehicle interiors that are energy efficient, it is necessary to establish new engineering requirements, define new verification processes, develop new test & sign-off methods/procedures, and establish new virtual, CAE-based engineering methods.

Human thermal comfort is still a field of active research. Therefore, this position must interface closely with experts in Core Product Development teams (Vehicle Engineering, Climate Control, Electric Vehicle Energy Management Systems, Digital Services), Vehicle Verification, Research, E&SE, and the supplier base. This position will provide consultation to Ford regarding awareness and advancements occurring in academia and influential organizations such as the US DOE and ASHRA.

What You'll Do…

  • Lead the development of human thermal comfort-centric engineering and design verification processes to drive the climate control system, cabin interior design, and control strategy development including:

  • Definition of human thermal comfort related design and performance requirements and standards

  • Definition of the Global Product Development System integrated DV processes (vehicle program milestone deliverables)

  • Definition of DV methods (test & CAE) which have to be applied at different milestones

  • Documentation of human thermal comfort DV process

  • Co-own the human thermal comfort versus cabin energy usage trade-off strategy (partnering with energy management leads from EVs and ICE/xEVs

  • Lead exploration of new technologies that can help to deliver human thermal comfort while minimizing the cabin energy usage

  • Support the development of human thermal comfort-centric climate system control strategies

  • Support the development of human thermal comfort-related HMI solutions

  • Define the required CAE (1D-3D) capabilities needed to establish an efficient human thermal comfort DV process

  • Support CAE team in correlating new CAE methods

  • Support the CAE team in selecting and correlating a human comfort CAE model (e.g. Berkeley, Fiala, …)

  • Interface with x-functional partners (EV/ICE/xEV Energy management, P/T, Research …) to deliver an overall thermal systems engineering process taking human thermal comfort requirements into account

  • Cooperate with Research experts to drive the development of human thermal comfort models (processes, methods, tools)

  • Work closely with industry experts to stay at the forefront of the human thermal comfort technology

Please note: Relocation will not be available for this role.

You'll Have…

  • Masters in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, thermal engineering, thermal-fluids or equivalent

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in automotive aerodynamics and/or thermal systems engineering

  • Minimum of 6 years experience specifically in automotive climate control systems engineering

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in automotive aero-/thermal testing

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in working with cross-functional, global teams

Even Better, You'll Have…

  • PhD preferred

  • Experience with human thermophysiology & human thermal comfort applications

  • Experience in the application of CFD methods in automotive climate control systems engineering

  • Experience using statistical analysis and statistical analysis tools
