Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: 19021 US Hwy 285, La Jara, CO 81140 & 106 Blanca Ave., Alamosa, CO 81101

Duties: Performs all antibody screening, identification, and cross matching procedures required in the administration of blood and blood components. Understands and abides by the laboratory compliance plan and can effectively apply the plan requirements in relation to the Hospital's Compliance plan. Participates in ongoing compliance education, reads updated Local Medical Review Policy (LMRP), and newsletters. Reports any misunderstandings or questions to the laboratory compliance officer. Maintains adequate records of all procedures and monitors inventory of supplies. Performs all procedures related to counting and identification of blood cells, coagulation studies, and other specialized hematologic studies. Inoculates, cultivates, classifies, and identifies microorganisms found in body fluids, exudates skin scraping, autopsy and surgical specimens to provide data on cause, cure, and prevention of diseases. Performs all procedures related to molecular testing, including PCR and NAA. Calculates and tabulates test results for accuracy and statistical purposes. Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks and records results. Prepares for and participates in the CAP, CLIA and CMS accreditation surveys. Observes all guidelines to comply with OSHA, CLIA, and other regulatory agencies. Confers with Pathologist when test results are questionable and need to be validated. Participates in the lab proficiency testing programs. Prepares and interprets Gram stains. Draws blood by venipuncture, capillary or arterial puncture while observing strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis to prevent infection. Maintains laboratory equipment by performing preventive maintenance and documents same to assure quality control and compliance with accreditation. Prepares specimens for distribution to reference labs. Able to competently use the Laboratory's and hospital's computerized information system. Participates in all required training and educational programs. Writes policies and procedures as needed for specific units within the laboratory department. Salary $85,280. Requirements: Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a related field required. Two (2) years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or related role. Experience must include: perform quality controls, calibrations, and troubleshooting on general Chemistry instruments to ensure adherence to established standards of precision and accuracy; operate, maintain, and troubleshoot analyzer such as ABL 90; analyzers for blood gasses; perform complex tests on patient samples for female fertility tests, male fertility tests, and other hormone examinations; process, identify, and analyze blood for tumor tests, including CEA and PSA, and body fluids for toxic components, including Tramadol, Fentanyl, MethAm, CoC, THC, BZC, BAR, PCP, AM, MOP, and MTD.
