The Opportunity

This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) division where we're focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.

As the Data Scientist for the Global Strategic Marketing group, you will shape the direction of data science and data strategy at ADC and will:

• Design, validate, and solve strategic questions addressing business opportunities across the organization using data sources using a wide variety of structured and unstructured data sources such as app utilization data, customer contacts, sales performance, and secondary analytics on market performance

• Focus on developing hypotheses and employ a diverse toolkit of rigorous analytical approaches, different methodologies, frameworks, and technical approaches to test them

• Manage the creation of mathematical models to deliver business value by leveraging statistical practices, operations research techniques, and data analysis

• Coordinate efforts with cross functional divisions and strategic business partners to design systems that support analysis

This role is strategic in nature, and as such will work closely with key stakeholders to assure continuous evolvement of data science and actionable analytics at ADC. A candidate for this position would be well versed in programming, mathematics, statistics, data modeling, and have strong business acumen. The ability to work in a diverse team and willingness to learn will be key attributes in the role. Finally, you have the opportunity to help millions of people with diabetes globally through learnings from structured and unstructured data sets that exist in our organization.

What You’ll Work On

• Create data-driven stories that address strategic business questions, supported by strong analytical skills with a solid foundation in programming (e.g. R, python), database environment (e.g. big-data platforms, SQL), and dashboard development (e.g. PowerBI)

• Work cross-functionally to design systems that will support deep analysis

• Define and implement a clear data science and analytics roadmap for the division, with proven ability to influence cross-functionally in order to materially impact the business

• Design, create, test, and implement complex models and algorithms that drive analytical solutions throughout the organization

• Conduct advanced statistical and other analysis to provide actionable insights, identify trends, and measure performance

• Collaborate with technical translators and understand business opportunities to implement scalable and sustainable solutions

• Collaborate with other teams to develop novel ways of meeting business objectives utilizing cutting-edge technologies and tools and disseminate best practices

• Stay abreast of developments at the intersection of data science, technology, and business relevant to the company and drive business innovation through analytics

• Effectively communicate the analytics approach and how it will meet and address objectives to business partners

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

8+ years of relevant experience in the biological data analytics/science in a relevant industrial or academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications

10+ years of experience in analytics

Strong understanding of data analytics, structured and unstructured data analysis, predictive modeling techniques, and data visualization as well as a good command of emerging methodologies like artificial intelligence

Experience with data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), and/or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R) plus reporting tools such as PowerBI, SAP BI

Experience engaging cross-functional teams to build a strong data infrastructure

A recognized thought leader and innovator in the development of new tools, methodologies, and problem-solving approaches

Broad understanding of the latest data science, analytics, and technology trends and their impact on business strategies and operations

Curiosity-driven, with mindset geared towards continuous learning. Must be comfortable with ambiguity with a proven track record of being a self-starter.

Outstanding communication skills, particularly in conveying complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences such as clients, team members and senior executives.

Ability to travel / work in Europe and other countries for extensive periods when needed (initially 1-3 months at a time; longer-term settling to 10%)

MSc/PhD ideally in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or similar technical disciplines/experience

Good understanding of AWS tools such as Athena, Sagemaker, Comprehend

Good understanding of data pipelines such as data transfer methods, API documentation

Experience with large-scale A/B testing systems, especially in the domain of online advertising

The base pay for this position is $144,100.00 – $288,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
