New York University Part-time Lecturer: Nursing and Women’s Health in Accra, Ghana

NYU Accra is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate 4-credit course titled "Women’s Health and Human Rights in Africa". Teaching for this course will commence in spring 2025 (January, to May 2025). The course will examine the major social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental forces affecting the health, well-being, and human rights of women in Africa. Using the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Health in All Policies approach, the course will explore how the social determinants of health impact overall health and contribute to major health risks. A health equity lens will be used to explore access to care across the continent. The role of national, international, global, and philanthropic organizations and their impact on women’s issues will be examined.

The expected pedagogy should be a blend of in-class lectures and tailored co-curricular programs that will give students an appreciation of the issues being discussed. As much as possible, apart from the assigned texts and other related reading materials, the facilitation should draw on first-hand clinician experience that can help tease out the nuanced nature of the manifestations of women’s health challenges on the African continent.

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated excellence as an instructor, who can teach diverse students, lead rigorous class discussions, and engender critical analysis of the multi-layered issues pertaining to the course learning milestones. A Doctoral Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field, plus clinical practice is preferred. A Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or other related health field is acceptable if the candidate has significant clinical experience, especially in a teaching hospital. Being a member of an African College of Nurses will be an advantage. Two to three years of experience teaching at the university level (any previous experience in teaching American undergraduate students) will be an advantage. The successful candidate should have the right to live and work in Ghana prior to the appointment.

Applications in the form of (1) a current C.V., (2) letter of interest, (3) letters of recommendation (4), and student course evaluations (if available) should be submitted online to Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/127632 no later than May 1st, 2024. The terms and conditions will be discussed with the successful applicant. The successful candidate should have the right to live and work in Ghana prior to the appointment. Informal queries about the role can be directed to Dr. Nick Okai at nno211@nyu.edu
