Brockton Hospital Peer Recovery Coach in Abington, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

Provides peer recovery support services to clients involved in substance abuse treatment services. Uses strengths based approaches to assist clients in achieving sustained recovery from their substance use disorder by building resources and community support networks.

Department: Signature Addiction Medicine/OBAT

This is a full-time 40 hour/ week position

Responsibilities:

The Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) will serve as a guide and mentor to patients with Substance Use Disorder(s) (SUD); s/he will meet the patient at the hospital and facilitate the transition into the Office Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) clinic. The PRC will empower patients in their personal journeys to recovery through advocacy, guidance, support, and knowledge. Responsibilities of the PRC will include mentoring, linkages to internal and community resources, relapse prevention planning, and building a sense of community. When possible, the PRC will link the patient to a recovery community in his or her neighborhood or church, while providing regular follow-up and meeting with the client as requested. PRCs will use skills such as motivational interviewing to encourage return to treatment if the patient relapses, and will utilize a harm reduction approach to ensure patient safety in the event of a relapse.

The PRC will be accessible after-hours by phone. Based on program activities and needs, it is likely staff will need to work some variable evenings and weekends.

      BASIC KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/APTITUDE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Current credential or license issued by a state or credentialing authority, if applicable.

  • At least 60 contact hours of peer recovery-focused education and training to include education in documentation, community/family education, case management, crisis management, Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC), screening and intake, identification of indicators of substance use and/or co-occurring disorders for referral, service coordination, service planning, cultural awareness and/or humility, and basic pharmacology.

  • Minimum two years of recovery from Substance Use/Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders (self-attestation), if applicable.

  • Passing score on the NCPRSS examination within four years of the application.

    Education/Experience/Licenses/Technical/Other:

  • Education: GED, High School Diploma, or higher

  • Experience: Minimum of one year full-time of direct practice (volunteer or paid) in a peer recovery support environment.

  • Certification/Licensure: Current certification by (or pursuing certification by) the National Association of Drug and Alcohol Counselors.

  • Software/Hardware: Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
